Question about 2000 Hyundai Accent

1 Answer

Hyundai accent is 2009 model. On a really hot day the car smells badly of petrol. Smell mainly in the back seats. Especially strong in the trunk (dicky). Took it to two different dealers. Here are same of the things they did the first time around (I'm taking the mechanic's word for it): * Cleaned the fuel pipes of junk * Cleaned the fuel filter * Removed the sensor board and cleaned the contacts (no idea which one) Second time around he claimed that the coolant can cause this smell, so he drained the old coolant and replaced it. When I wasn't convinced it was the cause, he said a lot of Hyundai models - i10s, Santros etc are also reporting this problem. I had him check for cracked pipes, cracked fuel tank. Everything seems fine. Would appreciate pointers.

Coolant smells like fuel, i think you need to find a new mechanic, obviously there is a problem around the fuel tank, does it do it all the time, what about when tank is half??? I would be checking the fuel tank breather, fill fuel right up to the top, go on a bumpy road or just do a sharp left and right (safe speed) and have a look underneath where the tank is to see if there are any wet patches, if there is a leak then you have found the problem, just need to find where the leak is. If there is no leak than i would deffinately have the breather checked out, one other thing to check would be your fuel filler cap, either way this problem should not be there and be fixed by Hyundai, it is a serious health problem!!!

Thank you. Will have the mechanic check it out. One of the problems is that these mechanics tend to blow off women drivers. This guy initially claimed all cars have this problem. I told him in the last 20 years I've been through 3 cars, never had a problem. Anyway, thank you for the pointer. Regards.

Smell fuel near carburetor in front.

The carb float chamber is vented to atmosphere and under certain conditions there will almost always be a fuel smell near the carb, especially for those with a developed sense of smell. Petrol is a liquid with highly volatile elements and in hot weather or a hot engine those elements will readily evaporate and then the vapours will drift where they will.

Any abnormally strong or stronger than usual fuel smell should be investigated and while most leaks will be easy to find with a cold engine and cold weather it is worth noting a tiny fuel leak can create a strong smell in mild or hot weather or with a hot engine and be virtually impossible to find.
It will probably be necessary to remove the air cleaner to check for carb flooding and it is also worth noting in the case of an engine driven fuel pump there is a possibility of a leak into the engine crankcase.

Put a new in tank fuel pump in 3 days ago in my hyundai accent, but can smell petrol inside the car.

I would double check that your fuel tank is sealed. Fuel fumes can be very bad for your health and can be very dangerous. Sounds as though the gas line may be leaking, or the fuel pump seal is leaking.

I have noticed that in really wet weather (moved to Vancouver recently), my 2002 Hyundai Accent GSI starts to smell bad (like wet carpet). Upon inspection, the back seats feel damp to touch and when I lift...

Check the trunk rubber for damage and/or improper mounting. There will ordinarily be drain holes in the area where the tail light assemblies mount to the back of the car. If they are plugged up, the water will have nowhere to go when it rains, and will seep through the gasket between the tail light housings and the body metal. If unable to find the problem, have someone soak the back of the car in the trunk / tail light area with a garden hose, and watch for water intrusion from inside the trunk with a flashlight (hopefully, the rear seat backs flip down so you can gain access to the trunk from inside the car). Good luck!

When I enter the car, I smell a antifreeze/exhaust smell in the car. Do I take the car into the mechanic to get serviced. I haven;'t noticed any leaks.

the smell is caused by a leaking heater core inside the dash, it only takes a tiny bit of vaporized hot coolant to smell very strongly.

After driving for around 30 minutes, the brake

That sounds like the "Porportioning valve" is defective.
You may want to go to your local library and check out a Chilton's, or some other repair manual for the "how to" to fix yourself or take it to a tech you can trust.

Fuel problem

you might want to check your cabin air filter or the charcoal canister underneath the hood. it's purpose is to remove any excess fumes from the gastank. if it's broken or clogged that would explain why you smell gas in the car
