This may be a pulley or somthing that is running with the start of your engine. If its a tapping sound that gets louder as you accelerate, that is usually a valve noise or somthing internally. This is a very bad thing if the noise is comeing from the engine inside under the valve cover. If thats the case then check the oil level and take it quickly to an auto repair shop for a diagnosis. Another culprit as mentioned in the beggining is a pulley that is either loose or out of round, whick does not cost to much to replace.

Hope this Helps!

Driving a good distance car makes a whamming sound the more Itry to accelerate the speed decreases whinning louder only stops whinning when I pull over to let the car cool down

Have your wheel bearings checked, when a wheel bearing is going bad it hums louder as you accelerate, when you stop or slow down the sound stops. A bad bearing does that, it over heats due to it not having enough grease on the bearing and will hum as you drive and get louder as you accelerate.

Your lifters are knocking most likely. I'm assuming it's the worst when you first start it. Get it checked out by someone who knows cars.

Screeching sound at the back of engine at the top of head

Check all the bolts and fastenings for the heat shrouds around the exhaust manifold to make sure they are there (and firm). If you can undo them without snapping them, take the shrouds off to check for gravel trapped in that area. It could also be a failing cat converter, but a lot less likely. My next step would be to remove the rocker cover and have a look......

Loud tapping noise in engine

It sounds like you have a rod problem. If that is the case the engine will need to be taken apart to be fixed. Price varys from shop to shop but they can do a bunch of tests on it and tell you exactly what is wrong with it for about 80 to 100 dollars

I have a 91 legacy GT and theres quite a bit going wrong...when you start her for the next 20minutes or so theres a taping noise which increases as you accelerate...going around corners a loud noise comes...

hi you have a worn camshaft it always makes noise when worn the tapping sounds louder when you accelerate.its important to have regular oil changes as the oil ways can become blocked and lead to this type of trouble if oil changes are over looked.also check for worn big end bearings that connect the pistons to the crank shaft.
