Question about 2005 Chevrolet Equinox

1 Answer

Took 05 equinox to shop for wheel bearing work and shop called and said center carrier bearing needed replaced immediately. He told me that he would change it for $64 labor and $150 for the driveshaft shop, then he said took it to the shaft shop and they both were taking it apart and the shaft shop said they couldn't do it, so the owner called and said the shaft shop couldn't do it and that he was going to get a new carrier bearing from the dealer and we would have it back the next day by closing time... then he called the next morning and said there was a problem because the center carrier bearing was welded on and can't be replaced and need a new drive shaft and that our drive shaft was in pieces on the shop floor, he said it was broken, i to;d him that i would pay for the wheel bearings he replaced plus labor but i wanted him to put the drive shaft back on the car the way it was when i brought it in to him, he saqid he couldn't but could tow it to me, i said i'd call him back. He called me back and said it would take a new u-joint to put it back together and he could do that and that would get it back to where it was when i drove it in to him? does this make sense? i am not pleased with the outcome so far, i feel that he didn't do his homework before he dug into the job, and never did he mention the possibillity of a drive shaft replacement being a worse case senario at $1151

It does seem a little bit shady. They should have done a full diagnosis on the repairs that were needed and then gotten you're approval before they proceeded with the repairs. If you didn't give them approval to do all that work, then they did it at their own risk. In my opinion you should only pay them for what you approved them to work on. What a hassle...good luck with that.

How to replace bearing in rear drum on a 2006 chevy equinox

You need to use a bearing press to get it out and the new one in. You can try to hammer it out with a piece of pipe if you can catch onto the lip. Sometimes wheel bearings get very stuck and if it scores or damages the drum on the way out you may need to get a new drum. If you don't have the tools you might be able to rent or borrow a press from a shop or auto parts store. If you take it to a brake shop and have them press out the bearing and put in the new one it shouldn't cost that much.

Cost replace wheel bearings

It would depend on where you live and what type of shop is doing the work, but yes that is probably a fair price.
You have to remove the bearing assembly from the axle so labor would be more than an hour, and the part cost is $200 or more.

How to replace front hub & bearings

You were probably told that because when the wheel bearings go out, a lot of people and shops will just replace the hubs, either new or from a salvage yard, with the bearings already installed (pressed into the hubs). Some models, I think, may not even sell the bearings separate. But since you can buy the bearings alone, that may be the best route for you. That, or the salvage hubs route. If you go with new bearings, you can take off the hubs yourself, and take them with the new bearings to a shop to have them pressed in for a nominal fee. It will save you some serious labor repair costs.
Good luck.

We took our 05 equinox to the shop for rear wheel bearing replacements, the owner of the shop called and said the center carrier bearing was really really bad and he could replace it. We said ok to the...

That work should ONLY be done by a
Drive Shaft Specialty Shop ,that repairs
& balances lots of things, not just driveshafts

I will agree with you, as I don't know

But a dealer will sell you the whole deal,
so I never recommend them for even a car wash

There may be,just saying, don't know, a very few that
can't be repaired.

I would pick it up & personally take it to a driveshaft
shop & not pay anything for that part of the work
agreed to.

I never had those issues when i had my trans shop,
because I followed my rules & I was a machinist
before, so there isn't much I can't do

Flywheel,Clutch &Driveshaft Balancing & tire
mounting I personally take out of shop & stand by
to see the work getting done.

I have been told my front wheel bearing is bad. Can replace the just bearing or do I have to replace the whole hub assembly.

the bearing and hub are peened as a assembly and will need to be pressed out of hub carrier on early 05. later models use a one piece bearing that will need to have hub pressed out, then bearing pressed out of carrier both bearings are avalable aftermarket

I'm told I have a bad carrier bearing? Noise and vibration.

carrier bearings are in the rear differential, and when they go bad,you will have a VERY noticable grind noise come from the rear and some vibration. They are reltively easy easy to replace yourself, though a good shop will charge around $200 for parts AND labor.

Rubber and metal mount on the drive shaft nust after the u joint 2005 Chevy equinox Looks like a mount and it is suppose to keep the drive shaft flat.

I am going through this now. I hear there is a huge problem with these. Some call a "hangar bearing". I got one from the dealer...only place available. It took me and a very talented mechanic friend most of the day yesterday to get the drive shaft out of the car and apart so the bearing could be changed. We had to use heat and a press to split the shaft at the yolk and torches to cut out the U joints. The end that mates to the tranny needed heat as well. After finally getting it out and bringing it to a driveline shop for balancing I was told they can't balance it because they have no way of mounting the front "CV joint" fitting to the balancer. The weights all came off the shaft when the bearing failed as it vibrated away. Not very happy with this at all. Can't believe GM hasn't re-called these. The drive shaft looked as though it had been rotting away in a field for twenty years. Our vehicle is an '05.
Good luck,
