Question about 2000 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

My instrument cluster stopped working. The most common cause was bad solder joints on the cluster connector. The fix was to remove the cluster and resolder the connector joints. I have done this. After reinstalling the cluster I turned on the ignition and now not only do the gauges still not work but some of the relays are chattering. Since the battery was disconnected for a long time I assume this may have caused some problem. Where do I start to resolve this problem?

Recheck your solder joints for shorted gaps

I just finished having the same problem repaired on my 2000 caravan. It was driving me crazy as well. After doing all the recomended fixes (solder joints on cluster, cleaning contacts etc etc. I was no further ahead. I did find an edge on the transmission drain pan that was rubbing on a wiring harness but not quite through to the wires. At this point I gave up and brought it into a reputable shop. After 5 hrs of troubleshooting and $500 they found a white/ black wire under the battery box that was worn through and grounding out. All is well now except for my pocket book. I hope this helps someone avoid the frustration I went through.

What relay affects the instrument cluster? My instrument cluster intermittently cuts out for a period of time and then sometimes its back on. More often then not it is not working.

I think I would be investing time in looking for a bad earth(ground) wire for the instrument cluster or dash harness as what you describe is vindictive of a bad connection

Dodge and chysler caravan gauges not working or bouncing

this is a communication ccd error code from pcm to transmission.

i have found a fix that will be easy and cheap if you have soldering skills and a soldering iron. this will also fix your gauges from not responding or not working.

Remove your instrument cluster and check the solder joints on the back of the cluster main board. You may have to flex the board to see the cracks in the solder. i have found the main connector soldering joints to be cracked. more common is the bottom row all the way to the right pin. you will need to remove the board off the plastic cluster housing and flip it over.

look for the two rows of pins that are for the red plugs main connector. check them very well and re solder any in question.

My speedometer just stopped working on my 06 voyager

Did the check engine light come on?

Is the transmission still shifting or is it stuck in second gear?

If the above is true than the most likely problem is the output speed sensor has gone bad. This can be confirmed by pulling transmission trouble codes and/or looking at transmission data with a scan tool.

The sensor is located just to the right of the transmission cooler lines. the one right under the cooler lines looks identical but it the input speed sensor.

If other parts of the instrument cluster are not working than you could possible have a bad solder joint in the instrument cluster main connector. very common and failuer easy to fix if you have some soldering experience.

All gauges stopped working -- 99 Plymouth Voyager. This happened for brief time about a month ago and then started working again. Today, the probel has persisted for several hours.

smack the center of the dash right above the instrument cluster several times with the vehicle running. If the instrument cluster starts working you more than likley have a bad solder joint in the main connector on the circuit board.

You will need to pull the instrument cluster, partially disassemble it, checked for cracked solder joints, and then using a soldering iron re-flow those joints.

I have repaired many of these including my wife's town and country. I have photos of the bad joints let me know if you would like to see them an I'll get them posted.

If you have any other questions I will be happy to help.

Have 99 Dodge Caravan The Cluster is not working ( speed milage, shift pattern speed ometer, temp and fuel gauge. Is there a fuse for all or what do I look for the problem? The fuses all look...

with they key on whack the top of dash with the palm of your hand. Do this several times. If the instrument cluster come alive than you have bad solder joints at the main connector for the instrument cluster. The cluster will need to be removed from the dash and then disassembled. The broken solder joint(s) will be visible and can be re-flowed with a soldering iron.

Here are some pictures of the last one I fixed. You can see the ring around this joint this one happens to be the main ground for the instrument cluster.

Instrument panel keeps going out. bang on dash and the panel comes back to life, not all the time but majority of time. Obviously a shoirt somewhere. Need to knwo where to begin or if this is a known issue

It is really common for the solder joints to fail on the instrument cluster circuit board. These joints can be re soldered and it will usually fix the problem.

The instrument cluster will need to be removed and disassembled. The joints are on the backside of the circuit board.

This image is the cluster removed and disassembled. the screwdriver is pointing at the cracked solder joint for the main instrument cluster ground.

this photo is a close up of that joint. If you look carefully you can see a ring around the joint. That is the crack. It seems unlikely but that is enough for the joint to fail. Re-flowing the joint with a soldering iron will fix this problem.

My gauges just stop working tach, speed fuel ,and heat

u have a failed instrument cluster, this is a common problem and is due to poor solder joints at the connector on the circuit board, it can be repaired by the dealer or u can send it out to a instrument cluster repair facility, there are many on the internet, they will provide removal instructions on request..

Guages and insturment panel stopped working on a 1998 plymouth

In the event that you have not completely fixed this problem, I suggest the following: Do a google search for "98 voyager instrument cluster solder" and you will find an abundance of posts regarding the soldered joints on the main terminal connector on the back of your instrument cluster. If the behaviour is at all erratic and unpredictable, or hitting the dash makes the gauges come back to life, then you are about 99.9% sure it is the solder problem. It takes about 8 minutes to remove the instrument cluster (okay maybe 15), and about 2 minutes to remove the circuit board. By examining the solder joints of the main connector with a magnifying glass, you will probably see cracked or corroded solder on them. Briefly reheat each solder joint with a soldering iron to re-flow the solder. Your erratic gauge behaviour should now be history.
