Question about 1993 GMC Sierra K1500

1 Answer

My 5.7L Chev.engine has a significant loss of power when climbing mountains pulling our trailer.I can't maintain 30mph in 2nd.gear and have to drop to 1st.and even that is iffy. There is a lot of black smoke from the exhaust when pulling heavy as if its over fueling.Doesn't the o2 sensor tell the computer to cut back the amount of fuel required or does the throttle position sensor over rule. This happens at or about W.O.T. There is no missing or pinging and occasional back firing when going down hill. The spark plugs look normal, the air filter is clean, and I changed the gas filter but it had no restriction.Your help would be appreciated. Thank You in advance.

you could be getting clutch slip. to test for this park front wheels in front of a curb. then try to climb the curb. if it just spins and not climb them the clutch will need replacing. should climb easy up the curb. this is just a test don't put foot down to get up the curb.if engine stals just try again but engine staling is a good sign.

WHAT IS THE ALTITUDE? MOST ENGINES WILL LOSE POWER WHEN THICKER AIR IS PULLED IN CAUSING IMPROPER COMBUSTION. THE COMPUTER CANNOT COMPENSATE FOR A DENSER AIR FUEL MIXTURE. IF YOU DRIVE THIS ROUTE A LOT....GO TO A HOTTER SPARK PLUG

If it seems to run well otherwise, you might have a partially obstructed catalytic convertor. Usually if this is the problem, the engine will also bog down even if you try to rev it up when it is in neutral.

it sounds like your automatic transmission quit his job. How much miles are on the clock? If more than 150.000 and you pulled trailers, climb mountains etc. this will be the first choice. Let the engine idle, push the brakes and check if the car will go in any gear. If this will happen only in reverse gear, your auto trans need to be replaces. You can use a rebuilt auto trans.

If your old engine ran real bad with oil passing through your exhaust more than likely the catalytic converter is bad
