The starter key will not turn off the car when turning in backwards, it may have a broken lock pin?

Sounds like the cylinder is not connected with the switch, or the cylinder is broken.

How do you remove ignition lock cylinder on a 1973 dodge charger


These older vehicles had a tumbler release pin which needs to be pushed in while key tumbler assy is turned counterclockwise. Look for a small hole in the column, usualy located undernieth where the lock assy is. Insert something small such as a paper clip into the homle after turning the tumbler to the acsesorry position( backwards). push in the paper clip and rotate the lock assy backwards at the same time to release the tumber from the lock assy. and pull the tumbler out.

Fist of all the ignition switch tuns with out key its been laid up seveveral years.had to jump solinoid to get engine to run .so i replaed solinoid nowwhen you turn the key nothing happens youneed to jump...


As the car has been laid up many years, it needs a thorough servicing. Besides a solenoid in the starter motor, there is a bendex as well. Its role is to push the starter pinion forwards to enable it to engage the flywheel when you turn the key. And when the key is turned backwards then this pinion is pulled backwards. This goes bad sometimes as most of the things do. So it should be repaired. Then the starter motor will start functioning as it should.

The Key won't turn all the way. It only turns half-way and will not turn the full rotation to ignite the starter in order to start the vehicle. Please help me!!!


The final quarter turn of the key engages the steering lock. So while inserting your key, at position it gets stuck turn the steering left-right(to & fro) to loosen the locking pin such that now the key is free to turn the ignition. Oiling the steering locking pin would help too...........sodeep

Check the shift cable for proper adjustment. Remove the console, put shift selector in N (make sure wheels are blocked), remove lock pin from cable adjuster, check that the hole in the adjuster is perfectly in line with the hole in the shift cable. (there are 2 holes in the end of the shift cable positioned 90degrees apart to allow for 1/4 turn adjustments) If not perfectly aligned, loosen the lock nut on the shift cable and adjust as necessary. Tighten the lock nut and install the lock pin in the adjuster. If the lock pin feels like it's binding when being installed, it's still out of adjustment and must be adjusted again.
The key staying in the start position: try spraying wd-40 or similar lubricant into key hole, if condition is the same, you will need to change the key ignition assembly, as it is worn out,

Key broke off in ignition lock cylinder. Can't remove cylinder.


Non-Functional Lock Cylinder
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  3. Insert a 0.125 (3.17mm) drill bit in the hole at the top of the cylinder housing and drill out the retaining pin. NOTE: Be careful not to drill into the lock cylinder housing.
  4. Pull out the lock cylinder.
  5. Clean out all the metal shavings and check the tube for damage. If damaged, the housing must be replaced. To Install:
  6. Turn the new lock cylinder to accessory position and while pressing the retaining pin in, insert the lock cylinder into the housing.
  7. Turn the key to the OFF position the release the retaining pin.
  8. Try the lock cylinder operation in all positions.
  9. Reinstall the steering column covers.
  10. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

The key want turn to start the car


exactly! The cylinder lock gets activated when the key is turned back for removal it releases a pin which will actually lock the steering wheel. Exactly opposite when inserted, First it has to release the steering lock otherwise the key simply wont turn. So it must have got stuck in lock position . Try jostling the wheel and rotate the key towards ignition position. If you hear a small click, that's the release of that pin and the wheel becomes free and the key can also be turned. This assembly must have got jammed or broken altogether and you might have to change the entire keylock..........sodeep

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Functional Lock


The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders. Such cylinders either have a key available or known key numbers from which a key can be made.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
  3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

Using the key, turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position, then depress the retaining pin using a wire pin or small drift

To install:
  1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
  2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Non-Functional Lock
The following procedure applies to vehicles in which the ignition lock is inoperative and the lock cylinder cannot be rotated due to a lost or broken key, unknown key number or a lock cylinder cap that has been damaged and/or broken to the extent that the lock cylinder cannot be rotated.

Won't start?


sounds like you have an ignition lock engaged. try turning the a little bit back and forth and wiggling the key. that should unlock the ignition
