Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Hubby said that after checking, neither the linkage nor the fluid are the problem. He added that when he shifts into forward or reverse there is a rapid clicking coming from the transmission, but there is no movement in either direction. The clicking is not heard in park or in neutral. Thanks again for all your help!

Thank you so much for all the suggestions for the transmission problem with our 1997 Subaru wagon! After checking, Hubby said that neither the linkage nor the fluid were the problem. He did add that when the car is running and the gear selector is moved to forward or reverse he hears a rapid clicking noise coming from the transmission, but there is no movement in either direction; and the noise is not heard when in park or neutral. It is an automatic transmission, and Hubby replaced the motor after the previous owner threw a rod. Thank you again for your quick response to our query - we both appreciate it!

I'd replace the neutral safety switch on my 94 lincoln and the car starts but the transmission won't shift gears

There is a linkage inside the transmission that came off or lose so you might have to take it to a mechanic to get in there and repair so do not start car no more and you might have to have the car towed to a mechanic to look at it.

Hi, if it is an automatic transmission, it could be several things:
It could be really low on transmission fluid or the fluid may have leaked out. Do you see an reddish or reddish-brown fluid under the car? Check the fluid level by looking at the transmission fluid dipstick.
The torque converter (essentially a motion transfer device that resembles two fans facing each other) may be bad. As the engine spins, up, the fluid in the torque converter starts spinning and flowing and starts to 'spin' the blade on the transmissin side (it's called locking up the torqure converter). If there a malfunction in the converter, or no fluid, as noted above, no motion to the transmission.
Is the emergency brake stuck on?
Another issue might be the transmission linkage - when you move the shift handle to "D", there is a linkage that moves a lever on the transmission to change how fluid moves thru the transmission, etc. Check for a broken linkage between the bottom of the shift handle and the tranny. This is best done at a good auto repair shop or dealer.
If this is a manual transmission car, you probably have a worn out clutch plate or broken shift linkage. See a mechanic.

If your hubby is not a mechanic then I suggest that you take this car or van to a real mechanic that knows how to get into the place of the linkage to repair it back to the way it is suppose to be.

as the work was done in the area that transmission harness wires would have been moved, I would suggest checking that all of the harness connections have been properly connecyed , no wires damaged or broken as a first action rhen move onto the cheapest units and check them for correct operation
I would also be looking at the torque converter clutch solenoid/servo action first as if that is not operational ( possible wires and connections ) nothing else in the box will work and that could indicate that the torque converter to flexi plate bolts are missing

91 Dodge Spirit stuck in low gear, won't shift out.

Sounds like you need a new shift cable. Remove the shift cable from the linkage on the transmission. If the transmission linkage moves freely back into the park position and the shift lever inside the car still will not move back into park than the cable is bad. If the transmission shift linkage will not move back into park with the cable removed than the transmission will need to be pulled apart to service the shift rod.

Won't shift properly

Your probably pulling OBD Code P0758, just like mine is. Ive changed the trans in a customers car now 3 times with the same result. Hard shift into rev and 2 but no third gear. I believe its the TCM or wiring harness. Check to have the TCM Completely flashed and re-written by the dealer, this may help, if Not replace the TCM is my only other options, because I do not believe that 3 transmissions have been bad.

My 1998 Honda civic ex won't move but the motor

Have you just replaced the clutch? Taken out the transaxle, and put it back in? Are you sure transmission was in good condition before this? If so, review your procedure carefully to be sure you got it all back right.
Watch the slave cylinder while someone depresses clutch. You should see the little plunger move slightly out and move the clutch lever back. The lever moves the release bearing inside bell housing into contact with the pressure plate. If slave cylinder doesn't move at all, try bleeding again. The plunger has to move when clutch is engaged.
I'm not sure what you mean by "will shift but won't go into gear". You mean it's actually going into a gear position and car won't move? Or it won't go into any gear, period. As if you had no clutch?

I would guess that something inside of the transmission has failed and there is no longer a mechanical connection between the motor and the drive axles regardless of what gear you attempt to move in.[sheared splines, broken planetary, etc.] Often when this happens you won't hear any kind of noise because of the failed parts being inside the transmission case...instead the car just won't go anymore. You could have a CV drive axle joint that has failed but generally they will make some noticable rattling or grinding noise as they churn away when you try to go forward or reverse. If something has failed inside of the transmission then the transmission will need to be removed and repaired. It if is just a drive axle joint that has failed then that can be replaced without doing anything to the transmission. Hope this helps and good luck!

Why wont car shift into gear

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

You may want to start adjusting the brake pedals. If it detects that you are not stepping on the brake then it won't shift into gear.
If the gear is moving but won't shift gears while running then you may want to start on replacing the transmission fluid. It can be burnt that's why it's not operating properly.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

The transmission is nearly dry. Add some transmission fluid! Automatic transmissions require oil pressure for the car to move, and if you don't have enough oil in it, it won't build up enough pressure to move the car
