Question about 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300

1 Answer

AC blows for a while then quits...sometimes for short time it is off then other times stays off for minutes. 2 Benz places have worked on it $$$$ but only last for a short time then does it again and again. The hotter the outside tempature the longer it stays off.

When it quits blowing does the compressor quit too?

  • mwjw3 May 28, 2011

Yes, the compressor quits...nothing will work ...no speed change or even cutting the AC off
    will get anything to work.

Go to benzworld.org and do a search but what I think you will find is 1 of 3 issues. Drier is out of dessicant, compressor speed sensor switch is going out , or the Klima relay behind the battery is bad.

Ac blows hot air

I have had a similar problem quite a few years ago. You don't mention the model or year of your vehicle. It could be a relay that is on the firewall just below or behind the firewall in engine compartment in front of driver's side of the car. It took a really savvy MB mechanic an hour to locate and fix after 2 months in other shops, including an MB dealership. Mine was a 1988 560SEL that had that problem. After that was fixed, it worked perfectly for another 5 years - at which time I sold the car.
I hope this helps...

The a.c. clicks off and on yet blows cold air when clicks on,but doesn't stay on very long

The common cause of this is that the AC system has a small leak and is low on charge.

My Outback AC when you turn the car on sometimes does not blow cold air and at other times it does. Turning it off and then on sometimes gets it going. Over the last 12 months sometimes it works for...

Howdy Grichards360,

Not knowing the AGE of your AC only makes it a wee
bit harder to speculate... (good news though)...
INTERMITENT operation = cheap & easy.

SUFFICE it to say REALLY EXPENSIVE issues
are like HATE & UGLY... They stay (and accumulate).

My BEST GUESS is your system pressure is
right at the THRESHOLD where designers
have CORRECTLY (even mercifully) decided it is
marginal enough not to USELESSLY operate the
components at all...

An ideal time (and stable enough system) to
"top-up" your refrigerant charge... (see below)

unless you live in CALIFORNIA ... you should easily be able to purchase a kit to accomplish this TASK yourself.

Two CAUTIONS here:

1). Refrigerants can be quite dangerous...
(read & heed precautions (especially refrigerant TYPE)).

2). "Top-Up" is a STUNT... Proper maintenance would
dictate a serious consideration be given to PROPER
lubrication. If this is the first time in 10 or 15years you will
PROBABLY be fine...

(ELSE: study up or comment back).

Hope this helps

AC blows cold but when will not stay in recirculate mode

It is possible that your heater control valve is not restricting the water flow to your heater control valve when placed in the AC position.
