How long was the oil light on before the engine died? Did you hear any noises coming from the engine before it died? If the oil light was on for a while and you were still driving on it, the engine could have seized up which would explain why it won't start back up. Do you know why the oil light came on? Do you have an oil leak that you're aware of or have you seen blue smoke coming out of your tailpipe while driving? There are a lot of different scenarios that could have happened with this.

Save Your Money. The Lumina is one of many GM throw away cars. Scrap it. You can buy a running car cheaper than fixing the Lumina. Just don't buy another GM product.

I have a 97 Chevy Lumina. It has 276,*** miles on it. I bought it used 4 months ago. It was running excellent then the service engine soon light, low coolant light, and change oil soon light started coming...

The fact that the oil was low would not be from the oil pump, but from wear in the engine. If it is not smoking when you start it or as you drive, you can probably keep it running by just keeping the oil level checked at each fuel fill-up. As for the car shutting off, you didn't say if the engine seized or got real hot. A low oil pressure problem should have triggered a warning light before the problem got to the point where you lost the engine.

If the car ran after you added the oil, you got lucky and need to always check it.

1992 chevy lumina euro 3.1 while driving the engine acts like it is going to die then it regains power and then repeats the sluggish, lack of fuel .

check fuel pressure most likely bad fuel pump. also check your oil sending unit or gauge. chevys run the fuel relay to the oil pressure switch in case the oil is so low the car wont start. sometimes the relay in between this circuit goes bad as well. if all is well check or replace the ignition module (located directly under coils) or distributor integrated if it has a distributor

I have a 97 Chevy Lumina. I drove away from work last night and got about a block or so and the engine died. The oil light came on so I figured it needed oil. I put 3 quarts in it and it started right up...

Did your car have a funny knocking noise before you added the oil either the 1st or 2nd time and to add 6 pints of oil then you must be either burning it (a lot of blue smoke ) out the exhaust pipe or a very bad leak somewere, but if you need more oil again then if its about 6 pints again then the answer to your question would be Get and Fit a second hand engine as yours wont be any good by now as the bearings and chrankshaft would be well worn and buggered .
Does the engine turn over by hand easy And have you lost power in the last few days or any strange noises from the engine compartment.
It doesent sound good i must admit but Let me know how you get on .. Ron

check your cooling system, the thermostat, water level, test for cooling fan sensors and fan operation, clogged radiator test for 30-50 degrees difference from the top to the bottom of the rad,it could be clogged.Less than 30 degrees it's good.
Check for water in the oil or white/brown foam on the dip stick that would be a blown head gasket, causing you engine to over heat and cut off.
