Check water pump and thermostat. Also check for air in the system, when the car is cold, remove the radiator cap, grab the top hose, turn on the car and pump the hose by hand, this will help push all of the air out of the system. If there is no air in the system then it is most likely a thermostat or water pump failure

Radiator fans not coming on. replaced thermostat and cooling sensor


Hi Bill, is the engine actually getting hot enough for the fans to come on? if the engine does have overheating problem (but you say the temp gauge reads normal) then i would check the operation of the engine temp switch, there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fans.

I have a 2002 ford fiesta 1.3lx. When the engine is hot the coolant hoses are hard and obviously full of air. What are the possible causes of this.


As long as your not overheating and fans working properly, hard /firm hoses are normal. Cooling system builds pressure when hot, like a pressure cooker. The radiator cap maintains that pressure along with proper coolant mix to prevent boiling.

2004 explorer 4.0 coolant reservoir boils over when stabolized at normal level, no heat when level drops temp indicator normal


go to autozone rent the free tool called a block tester buy the fluid for it (about $8.00 us)drive the car make sure the resivour is about 3 inches down so you dont suck any fluid into block tester. pour blue fluid into block tester put it in antifreeze resavour. squeeze bulb sucking air from resouivour for up to 2 minutes if fluid turns yellow your head gaskets are leaking. I think you may find this to be your problem

The car was overheating i checked all hoses and replaced the thermostat the radiator it still is ovrheating and the water is boiling in the overflow tank


Answer could be a faulty thermostat,or it could be a sign that your head gasket is about to blow ,or last of all your timing could be out of sync.

Answer 2 from Inventus: It means your cooling system is funtioning properly. In a system having a coolant recovery tank, coolant in the radiator is always up to the brim, hot or cold. There is negligible or no air space. When coolant in the radiator expands sufficiently due to warming from the engine, it will squeeze past the pressure cap's bottom seal and flow into the recovery tank. (If no provision for such expansion was present, the expansion would rupture the radiator or your hoses.) Only coolant within the radiator is under pressure, and because of this pressure (together with the elevated boiling point that the "anti-freeze" permits), it normally does not boil. But once past the pressure cap's bottom seal, the overflow is at atmospheric pressure and therefore boils.
This boiling is usually unnoticed after a short, i.e., local, trip because the cooler coolant already in the recovery tank quenches it. But after some highway driving the influx of more hot overflow heats up all the coolant in the recovery tank to the (unpressurized, i.e., "natural") boiling point.
As the engine cools when shut off, the contracting coolant in the radiator sucks back coolant from the recovery tank. Fluid in the recovery tank should never be below the "full hot" or "full cold" marks, lest air be sucked in.

Your cooling fans are not turning on. It is not normal for your overflow tank to boil like that. It is true that your radiator is overflowing into the reserve tank, but that means yourr adiaotor is boiling. Check for blown fuses or relays for your cooling fans. IF theya re fine. run your engine for about 15 minutes and drive. When you temp level is at normal operating temp open your hood with the engine runing and see if your fans are on. If they are, then you may have a bad thermostat or a plugged radiator, or a bad water pump. If the fans are not on, get your cooling fan switch replaced if your car has one. Check your temp sending sensor

160 is not high-thats below warmup temp--the fan sensor has issues etc Vehicle is not gettin to operation temp so hav it diagnosed for free at a parts place-fan motor may be goin bad

It could be the impellor wearing out on the water pump, though I have not heard of this issue in your make of car, I have seen it first hand in other makes. The thermostat may not be opening up all the way, flow restriction,. The coolant temperture sensor could be going out, and the gauge in the dash could be going out. You could have flow restrictions else where in the engine. Have you ever had the engine flushed? these are the things that I can think of that would make your engine run hotter than normal.

Answer to second question: It appears that that the wire to the coolant Temp Sensor has developed e short to the chassis somewhere which is giving the Max reading on the guage. Check the wiring in the engine bay around the Thermostat area for chafing or if the wire to the sensor has become disconnected and is touching the engine. The cooling fans normally are turned on by another sensor either near the temp sensor or on the radiator. Check the wiring around those places as well.

One of the common things that gets missed at times is the radiator is down in cooling antifreeze. The car will act as normal during the warm up cycle and then the temperature guage will rise and then it will slowly come back down as the thermostat opens and/or the electric cooling fans come on. In actuality the engine is overheating, but it is not boiling over. The level of abtifreeze is at just the right level of lowness that you experience this phenomenon. After the engine cools off , (DO NOT REMOVE WHEN HOT - YOU CAN GET SCALDED WITH BOILING WATER/ANTIFREEZE)), remove the radiator cap and check the level within the radiator and also the antifreeze reservoir level. You can buy a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water that is ready to put into the radiator. If the level in both the radiator and reservoir are correct, you may have a bad thermostat or some other problem.
