Question about 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

1 Answer

I have two, 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazers with the same problem. No power to the A/C Compressor, all fuses OK, refrigerant OK. I saw the clutch will kick on intermittently, but will shut down almost immediately. Is this a common problem? or do you have any ideas? Thank You.

This is a common issue, the issue that I had with mine 3 times was that the vent door would not stay open which tells that fan clutch to turn on or off. I had to replace it 3 times, and the previous owner replaced it twice and the dealership once. The 2002 through 05 Trailblazers have this issue

The a/c compressor is not receiving power, all the fuses ok

When the refrigerant level is low the pressure sensor prevents the compressor clutch from engaging.
Have the refrigerant level tested, or alternatively, you can purchase refrigerant and gauges at most auto parts retailers. If you decide to do that, don't overfill the AC system, since that can result in blown seals.

My compressor clutch on my car won't run when put on

Do you have sufficient refrigerant in the system? The compressor will not run if the refrigerant charge is low. If the charge is OK, then check for voltage at the clutch. If no voltage, then check the cycling switch. If switch is OK, check the fuse, wiring, and control switch.

AC Compressor not engaging on 2000 Chevy Impala. Fuses and AC relay okay. No power at compressor. Need wiring diagram. Also need to know if compressor requires 12v for operation. If not what should voltage...

When your R-134a runs too low it will NOT engage the compressor. You need to refill your a/c system before the clutch will engage, I also suggest finding the leak.

Not cooling, recharged but still not cooling

The electric clutch must actuate the compressor when the A/C is turned on. If nothing, check for a blown fuse or defective relay (swap it for a similar relay) for the A/C. If ok, check with a voltmeter for voltage appearing at the clutch. If you read voltage, the clutch electrical winding is probably open. Do the radiator fan(s) come on when A/C is turned on?

Clutch does not engage with a/c turned on

Are you talking about the A/C clutch? No clutch engagement usually means no refrigerant in the system....or not enough to allow the pressure switch in the system to close allowing power to the A/C compressor clutch.
This is the problem 99% of the time there is no A/C clutch engagement. The other 1% is electrical....burnt out clutch windings or no power to the system.....fuse etc.

When I turn the airconditioner on or the defrosters, the heater/airconditioning fuse blows? Any thoughts on where to start looking?

Problem is in the a/c circuit. Any time the defrost is on the a/c compressor will cycle on & off as it is used to dehumidify the air directed to the windshield. That's why the fuse can blow even in defrost mode.

Unplug the power connector at the a/c compressor and see if the fuse still blows. If not, then with a dmm or vom test a/c clutch winding for short. If ok, then test clutch diode for short. The diode is usually mounted at the clutch winding, but I've seen Chevy's with a diode that plugs into fuse/relay block under the hood. I have replaced these so don't overlook it.

If fuse blows with compressor unplugged then first check circuit between compressor and a/c relay (power side) for a short. It's possible for the wire to rub a bare spot in the insulation along it's travel along the block, bracket or manifold to the compressor. If ok, then test from relay (winding side) back to switch.

Good luck.
