1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, "rear lamp failure"

The on board diognostics screen located behind the shifter underneath the radio says "rear lamp failure;" however the breaklights, tail lights, and reverse lights all work fine. This is the case when the lights are turned on or off. This problem started shortly after I pulled a U-Haul trailer and had the trailer lights hooked up.

Thank you very much for you prompt reply. The thing is, I have a factory trailer package on the Jeep and it came with an adapter that plugs into the "trailer harness." It's a no brainer to hook up a trailer and get the lights working. I thought maybe I should just try to replace that whole unit that the trailer adapter plugs into?

My 95 Jeep GCL has the same rear lamp failure message. All my lights, brake, tail, back up,4 way flashers, side marker, tag, third brake light (2 bulbs) are working. I checked at the dealer and verified correct bulb #'s and replaced with correct bulbs. Also replaced a bad socket on side marker. I get no message during the day when no additional lighting is required. But at dusk if lights are on Auto or you turn them on and activate the brake circuit the fault displays although all the lights are working. I am beginning to suspect the (LOM) lights out module as the culprit. All of my fuses under the hood and right side dash panel are good. I'm just tired of the message flashing in my face at night as it gets to be annoying. Cycling the ignition off and on will reset the message but it re occurs as soon as you turn the headlights on and activate the brake circuit. I also had a good quality trailer (Trail or Tow rite) plug in adapter which I removed and this did not help.

My 1994 Jeep Cherokee Laredo has also shown this rear lamp
failure on VIC. I replaced the two bulbs(not three) on the rear tailgate. It stopped for a few days, but it has started again. Any

I had the similar failure. I found that after I pressed the pedal even without the lights on the tail light warning started flashing. I found one of the three upper window brake lights out but after I changed it it did not repair the problem. Now all the lights were working with the same failure. I pulled both brake lamps and found one different number so replaced both lamps and still no fix. I realized the new lamp I replaced was slightly briighter then the other two upper brake lights. I replaced those two lights that we're working and it repaired the problem.

Somehow the U-Haul center that hooked up the trailer lights messed up and connected the plug incorrectly. If you have the paperwork to the plug you had installed, look under the rear or behind the tail lights and double check the connections and wiring. U-Haul should have used the kit that installs between the harness for the rear lights so this kind of thing doesn't happen. If I were you, I would take your car back to them and tell them to get it right. You paid them to have it installed correctly and evidently it wasn't. I see this kind of thing occassionally at my shop and U-Haul is just a block away. The U-Haul personnel aren't really trained to installed trailer plugs, most of the guys that work there used to wire up stereo equipment somewhere which brings up the question, why aren't they still wiring up stereo equipment???

I didn't know that you already had the correct stuff for it. Check your ground wiring, it's the white wires. If that seems good, yes do replace the plug itself. I've had to do that to my truck before. Make sure you have good grounds.

94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo: No power to left tail light

Traced the problem to the Lamp Outage Module located in the rear left quarter access panel behind the spare tire. Arcing had occurred on the left taillight line. Fortunately this part is readily available at your local Jeep recovery yard (none available in the U.S. from dealers). Recommend J& W Auto Wreckers in Antelope, CA (web site available). Massive number of Jeeps and fair prices. If you don't want to replace the LOM then you can join the two connectors that go into the LOM (LOM is optional) but you'll always show a lamp failure on your console.

Dash and shifter lights in 1996 jeep cherokee wont light

Hello and welcome to FixYa . Locate the dial that controls the brightness of the dashboardlights. If the control is not immediately evident. Make sure the brightness control is turned on. If it is and the lights aren't working, the problem may be a bad fuse. Check the fuse that controls the dashboard lights Replace the fuse if necessary. If just one part of the instrument panel is not lighting up, then you have either a burned-out bulb or a wiring problem.
