Question about 1988 Nissan 300ZX

Open Question

I have a 1988 Nissan 300zx turbo, automatic transmission. When the problems began it would run great for about 30 minutes, then develop what felt like a miss. This would progressively get worse for about 15 more minutes, then the car would die. It will immediately start back and might run for another block or maybe only a few feet and die again. It seems like this even gets worse. The speedometer seemed to work intermittently also. Now it seems like if I get in the car and if the speedometer registers 0 mph, the car will start cutting out fairly soon. If I get in the car and the speedometer sweeps all the way over past 140 mph, it will run for about the 30 minutes before it starts missing and cutting out. One time I was driving it and it was missing terrible. The speedometer came back around and started reflecting the correct speed and the car smoothed out and ran perfectly for 4 hours. The next day it was back to running bad. I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, distributor, coil, power transister and probably some other things I have forgotten. Can anyone help me out. I was going to change the speed sensor, but I cannot find where it is located. There is a speedometer pinion on the back of the transmission, but I understand there is also a speed sensor. I have 4 different manuals and neither show where it is or how to replace it. Help please!! Thank you

Nissan 300zx transmission replacement

No, that is not true, you can only use one from another 300ZX, 1990-91 for a manual transmission, 1990-93 for an automatic. Also you have to get the one for if you have twin turbo, or one if you don't.

How to change flywheel on 1990 300zx non turbo?

pull the transmission. remove the torque converter (automatics) or clutch and pressure plate (standards), the bolts for the flywheel are under that. make sure you replace the flywheel with the proper one especially if it's a standard.

a new car? I"M KIDDING!!! Haha! I'm sorry... I am a certified Nissan Scope Technician with over 10 years in a Nissan dealership.

These cars were kinda built "doggy" due to emissions regulations out at the time and it's a heavy car for what it is...

The first thing I would do is put a bigger turbo with a front mount intercooler and larger fuel injectors on this vehicle for more performance. The block is pretty much bullet proof to upwards of 350 horses...

I've built one of these cars that runs 10.50's in the quarter mile at 120+/- MPH...

I assume this is an automatic transmission. Is it a twin turbo or a non-turbo model? It sounds like you've lost fourth gear and are stuck in 3rd - those RPM would be about right. If you can provide more information, it will probably help in the diagnosis.
