When driving the 2005 saturn ion going about 45mph the car shut off and would not restart. The passlock light was on, and where the odometer is it would say "service engine...power steering, coolant" after several attempts at restarting the car it finally started, but then the automatic headlights would not come on, so when we manually turned the headlights on the car would die again. Everytime we got it started and tried to turn something extra on like the wipers or the headlights it would die. any thoughts?

It sounds like the TCC solenoid malfunctioned. The Torque Converter Clutch solenoid is a small electrical switch in the valve body of your transmission that controls the amount of "lock-up" on the torque converter. It sounds disasterous, but its actually an easy fix, and does not require removal of the transmission.
Passlock is the anti theft that is built into your car from GM. If the car is not stalling while driving or having starting issues, it is probably not a problem. It might just be an informative light. If it ends up making your car die or not start, it is a passlock failure which can be expensive.
It is electric, and if you are having problems like losing your power steering while driving it is a issue in the column and is now available for repair thru a factory recall. Take it to your nearest Saturn dealer.
Sorry the saturn's do not have a inertia switch. But more information would help. Like does the security light activate on the dash, you may have a bad Passlock, Place the ignition key to the on possition for 10 min and then try starting it.
Good luck and let me know how things are going. There should be instructions in your manual on how to get the car started if the Passlock is giving you problem.
