If it is a 2wd it has drum brakes on the rear. If it is 4wd it has disc brakes on the rear.

Will a rear knuckle w/disc be the same as one w/drum brakes?

Hi Michael, not as I understand it. Discs use brake pads and drums use brake shoes. Pads locate in a caliper and squeeze the disc from both sides. Shoes are held inside the drum and force themselves against the inside of the drum. Hope this helps.

What rear brakes can be found on a 2004 pontiac montana

Depends on model, could be drum or disc. Should be able to see calipers through the wheels, if it has rear disc, unless you have full wheel covers. Otherwise, it is drum for the rear. You can plug your specific model into a parts store web site and it should tell you what is available (drums/shoes or rotors/calipers/pads) for the rear, which essentially tells you what you have. The exceptions to that rule are a site that doesn't differentiate models well, and vehicles that offer some sort of package that adds rear disc brakes without changing the model designation. In the latter case, it should list both, and you will have to use a flashlight and maybe remove a hubcap to be sure (which I would recommend, anyway), unless it is guarded by a pit bull or grizzly (or rabid chihuahua).

2002 Pontiac Montana trans problem

no I don't think so , it is only the torque converter clutch engaging and disengaging due to engine load. if you want to test this. go on steady speed over 50 mph no gas pedal movement. touch lightly the brake pedal but not braking and release . during this see the rpm drop down and raise

hope it helps

Can't un-adjust rear brakes 2001 montana

Have you tried both directions? Remember when you go from wheel to wheel you must go back the other way in direction. Now this is if you have drums. You can release/loosen the emergency brake cable by underneath the body. Should find a bulkhead.

Changing the front brake pads on a 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6

no that is only the older rear calipers on gm and others. the fronts do not have that style caliper and sound like the calipers are frozen and may be way your changing the pads. try opening the bleeder screw and then compressing them if they go then you need need brake hoses and if not you need calipers. god luck man
