98 astro van w/4.3 shuts down and will restart after a hour or two . codes p0113 , p0404 , p1351 . any ideas

P0113 - The Intake Air Temperature Sensor converts the air temperature into a voltage that is high when the Intake Air is cold and low as the engine warms up. P0113 indicates a high voltage input from the Intake Air Temperature to the Power Train Control Module.

Common Problems That Trigger the P0113 Code

  • Defective Intake Air Temperature Sensor
  • Dirty air filter
  • Defective Mass Air Flow Sensor
  • Faulty or corroded Intake Air Temperature wiring or connections
P0404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Range/Performance. Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems are inherently problematic due to carbon buildup in the intake manifold, etc. This normal buildup can lodge in an EGR valve, holding it open when it should be closed. If this is the case, the engine may idle rough, or not at all. If the valve has failed and is NOT opening, then symptoms would be higher combustion temps and as a result, higher Nox emissions. But the latter symptoms aren't going to be noticeable to a driver.

Usually this code points to either carbon buildup or a bad EGR valve. However that doesn't rule out the following:

  • Open or short in the 5 Volt reference circuit
  • Open or short in the ground circuit
  • Open or short in the PCM controlled voltage circuit
  • Bad PCM (less likely)
Possible Solutions

1. Using a scan tool command the EGR valve to open while watching the actual EGR position (it will probably be labeled "desired EGR" or something similar). The actual EGR position should be very close to the "desired" EGR position. If it is, then the problem is likely intermittent. It may have been a lodged piece of carbon that has since dislodged, or it could be a bad EGR valve winding that intermittently opens or shorts as the valve temperature changes.
2. If the EGR "desired" position is not close to the "actual" position, then unplug the EGR sensor. Check for a good 5 Volt reference voltage to the connector. If it doesn't show a reference voltage, repair an open or short in the 5 Volt reference circuit.
3. If there is a 5 volt reference voltage, activate the EGR with the scanner, monitor the EGR ground circuit with a DVOM (Digital Volt/Ohm meter). It should indicate a good ground. If it doesn't then repair the ground circuit.
4. If there is a good ground, then check the control circuit. It should indicate voltage that varies according to the percentage that the EGR is open. As it's open more, the voltage should increase accordingly. If it does, then replace the EGR valve.
5. If the voltage doesn't increase incrementally, then repair open or short in EGR control circuit.

P1351 - Ignition Diagnostic Monitor Input Circuit. This is usually a wiring issue at the connector at the distributor, specifically a damaged wire or bad connector. Replace the wires and carefully examine the wires at the distributor if they have 'blind' breaks in the wiring, so feel the insulation and check for areas where it is easy to stretch the wire, indicating a break in the wire.

2001 astro van will not start when engine is hot. If I pour water to cool engine or wait a couple of hours it cranks right up. It will run all day if I do not turn it off. Any ideas?


this is an indication of a fuel vapour lock in the fuel system. Run the fault codes and look for problems in the canister system and EGR sections

02 sensor is your oxygen sensor, 98 chevy astro carries 3 oxygen sensor. i belived your bad sensor is on the passenger side by the exhaust manifold but if not try the drivers side all the oxygen sensor for this van are the same. you need to go under the van to replace it, if is to hard to get it out turn your van for five minutes then turn it off and try again, be carefull not to burn your self. the one close to the catalytic converter is the downstream oxygen sensor ok, good luck!!!!!!

DTC P0113 - Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input.The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine. The PCM supplies a 5 volt reference voltage to the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. The IAT is a thermistor that varies resistance based on temperature. As the temperature increases, resistance decreases. Low temperature results in a high signal voltage. When the PCM sees a signal voltage higher than 5 volts, it sets this P0113 check engine light code.


DTC P0183 - Fuel Temperature Sensor Circuit High Voltage.


I suggest to check wire connections.

code is to rich, will need scan tool to figure out how rich its running sorry.can be alot of things , must go thru test procedure its to long to fit in this space

4 years is a problem try empting the gas tank. and put the supreme gas in it on a full tank. check the coolent fluid and if problem still exsist check the fan

1994 Chevy Astro Van- four wheel drive


Sounds like the auto shut down relay. Located somewhere in the front grille/bumper area. Relay triggers on impact to shut down all power in order to prevent fires etc. Great idea but can cause exactly the frustration you are having if you don't know it's there!!
