Question about 1994 Mazda 2WD B Series Pickup

It is a rear wheel a rear wheel drive. The transmission needs to be removed. should the engine come out with the transmission.

Trans-axle transmissions are transmissions and differentials in one housing with the axles coming directly out of that housing, its the housing that bolts to the engine with 2 axles coming out.
Only in these layouts:

Can a transmission be removed from the truck without removing the motor?


woodchuckswo, You don't state here if the truck is front or rear wheel drive but the answer to your question is yes. If it is front wheel drive, then you will have to support the engine from above before you remove the transmission. If it is rear wheel drive then you need not support the engine as it will be supported by the engine mounts. Good luck with this.

Clutch replacement


Clutch replacement will requre the removal of the transmission. If it is a rear wheel drive the trans can be removed fairly easily. Front wheel drive autos have the engine and transmission mounted in a "transerve" (across) fashion and require more time for removal. rear wheel drive requires the removal of the driveshaft (not difficult) and the front wheel drive requires the removal of the drive axles( can be difficlt). If your not mechanicly inclined and have a fair assortment of tools and equipment, this job is best left to a quailified person. You need Jack stands, floor jack, transmission adaptor, and if it's a front wheel drive, you will need an inpact gun to loosen the axle nuts on the drive axles.

Don't have manual but here;

the clutch is located between the engine and transmission. Therefore you must separate the engine from the transmission to gain access to the clutch.

This is much more difficult on a front wheel drive vehicle.

On most front wheel drive vehicles the easiest way to this is to remove the engine and transmission as a unit. However on a front wheel drive vehicle the engine and transmission come out from the bottom. You disconnect all of the hoses, wiring, linkage, etc just like on a rear wheel drive vehicle. You disconnect the suspension and steering. You disconnect the front "K" member (front sub frame). Then if you have everything disconnected properly you lift the body off of the drive train. You can then separate the engine from the transmission and service the clutch. You reverse your steps to reinstall the engine.

As you can see this is much more involved than accessing the clutch on a rear wheel drive truck where the transmission can be removed without removing the engine.

There are a few front wheel drive GM vehicles I have seen where the "K" member can be removed in pieces. On these vehicles you only remove half of the "K" member and you can remove the transmission without removing the engine. Not sure if this is possible on a Ford.

Hello: If this is a rear wheel drive, you will find a dip stick under the hood towards the passenger side rear of the engine compartment remove the dip stick (should have a red handle) with a proper size funnel add transmission fluid through the tube for the dipstick. If it is a front wheel drive the procedure is the same except on the front wheel drive the dipstick is on the driver side toward the rear of the engine compartment. Check the fluid with the engine running. Do not overfill. Does the engine speed up when you press the accelerator? If so if the car moves after you put fluid in the transmission the you need to find out where the leak is and repair it. Use dextron3 transmission fluid

There is some work involve in replacing rear main seal, seal sit in the rear of the engine block, the transmission will have to be remove, and the fly wheel to get to the rear main seal.If you have never removed a engine or transmission, it might be best to pay and have some one do it for you.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Disconnect the range selector cable from the transmission bracket and from the transmission range select lever. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement .
  4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft in Propeller Shaft.
  5. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  6. Remove the transfer case if equipped. Refer to the appropriate Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case:
  7. Transfer Case Replacement (Selectable Four Wheel Drive) . • Transfer Case Replacement (Auto Four Wheel Drive ) . • Transfer Case Replacement (Manual Four Wheel Drive) .

  26. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the vehicle speed sensors and from the park neutral position switch.
  27. Remove all vehicle electrical harness wires, harness clips, tubes, and brackets that may interfere with the removal of the transmission.
  28. Remove the fluid fill tube and the fill tube seal from the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  29. Plug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
  30. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler pipes from the transmission. Refer to the oil cooler pipe quick connect fittings removal procedure in Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  31. Plug the transmission oil cooler pipe connectors in the transmission case.
  32. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
  33. Support the engine with a suitable jack stand before removing the transmission from the engine.

  35. 5.0L and 5.7L Gasoline Engine: Remove the studs and bolts securing the transmission to the engine.

  38. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
  39. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
  40. Flush the transmission oil cooler and the pipes whenever you remove the transmission for overhaul, or replacement of the torque converter, the pump, or the transmission case. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing .
  41. Clean the transmission case using a solvent dampened cloth. Do not allow solvent to enter the transmission.
  42. Air dry the transmission.
  43. Clean all hardware and the flywheel cover using solvent. Air dry all the parts.
  44. Inspect all the components for wear and damage.
  45. Inspect all the seals and the fittings for signs of wear.
  46. Inspect the torque converter for stripped or broken weld nuts.
  47. Inspect the transmission case for cracks.

The only real differences between AWD and FWD are the transmission, rear axle and the driveshaft that connects them. There may be a different ECM for for engine tuning, but replacing the transmission and rear axle with FWD parts will accomplish what you want to do (transmission for your engine size). This is a big job, not for a DIY tune-up guy. If you just don't want AWD, remove the drive shaft to the rear axle.

Hello, 1986 Toyota 4X4 Truck 22R carb engine manual transmission. My son was driving it and the rear wheels locked up. Driving in 2 High mode. He got the truck pulled over to the side of the road using 4X4...


I've seen a similar issue on other transmissions where the shifter slips out of the slots in the shift forks, either due to shifter bushing wear or just general wear on tte trans. It can usually be remedied at least temporarily by popping the shifter top off the trans and resetting the forks all back to nuetral and then reinserting the shifter. It gets jammed when two forks are trying to engage two different gear sets.
On one of the 4x4 sites, they tell you how to replace the shifter bushings, cheap fix if you are lucky.
