Question about Toyota Venza

I am getting good spark off the spark plug (new), I am getting good gas flow to the carb. If it fires it will bogg down after a minute and then just cut off.New battery, clean carb, and new pug. Mostly it won't start at all.

1985 dodge pick up that cranks but won't start


Need to have the basics: air, fuel, fire. Does carb shoot gas down carb barrel when you pump the throttle? Do you have a good spark when turning over? Air you should have. Pull a spark plug or two and see if they're wet. Leave one out, connected to plug wire, and have base well grounded, crank it and see if you've a good spark (no gas fumes around when you do this!). Make sure plug wires are going to the right plugs.

Turns over will not start


Depending upon your level of expertise I would say pull a spark plug and look for a spark.

Any gas combustion engine requires a fuel mixture and spark to "fire" If you know your spark plugs are firing, then the problem is most likely going to be fuel flow.

If it doesn't fire AT ALL. and you are sure you have a good spark, then its probably going to be a computer controlled fuel flow issue.

Are you getting any "service engine soon" lights? Got a really good charge on the battery? Is the engine cold like below freezing? And I gotta ask.... are your sure there is enough gas in the tank? If its low and sitting on a hill its possible its not getting any gas.

Check for spark at the sparkplug, to see if everything in the dist. is working right. And check the injector harness for something being pulled loose when the wires were jerked out.

Hmmm, love those old Festiva's, great cars. Sounds like you may have a worn bushing in the distributor causing the timing to change under load. Remove the distributor cap and see if you can move the shaft side to side any. If that's good, check your spark plug wires by inserting some known good plugs into the wires , ground the side of the plugs to the engine while someone else turns the engine over. If each plug is firing a nice blue spark hot spark then your plug wires are good. If you haven't changed the spark plugs do so, even new ones can be bad. Next is fuel, old carbs are problems esp if the car has sat a while. Weber 2 stage for about $220 is a sure cure for a bad carb, I have one on my Samurai 1.3.
You didn't say if the car has ample power when it's running ok. Do a compression check to see if your valves need work. All gas engines must have compression, fuel, correct timing on firing the sparkplugs. Last but not least if all else is good use a timing light to see if the timing is advancing when you rev the engine.

I have a 1980 cadillac with a 425 in it.it sat for 6 years and now that i put new gas in it and changed the plugs.it still has no power like it aint gettin enough gas or air or spark .or????? idk need some...


The performance of the engine is not to specifications as there can be fault in the cylinder, valves the fuel settings or the ignition - spark intensity.
Check the compression on all cylinders, check the valve settings or correct so that there is good seating. The fuel setting is important as the engine was unused , the only solution is to fully overhaul, use a repair kit, clean all ports, chambers with a test for flow.
Finally remove plug and check spark intensity, if low check ignition system, points, capacitor, HT wires, plugs and HT coil.
One set back the timing must be checked for the best performance , if all the above factors are good.

I just tested my spark plugs, and two of them are not sparking as bright as the other two. The car just recently ran out of gas. I replaced the fuel filter. The fuel pump IS good. NO fuel regulator leaks....


Well, you can try lightly sanding the contact point ( where the spark is inbetween the gap). If that doesent help at all, just to be certain that there is another issue, take one of youre good spark plugs and insert into the wire where the spark isnt as bright, if it is still looking the same than consider replacing youre wires or the coil that runs those spark plug wires.

Have you changed the tps? The tps is like a dimmer switch with the idle being the lowest setting and everything above that being progressively stronger. If the switch is bad it will not advance spark or gas flow.

your cam to crank timing is wrong...recheck it.  Or your spark plug wires are in the wrong places

Guide to starting a dead horse!
1- Spray a little starter fluid down the carbuerator. If it tries to fire, your timing and ignition is probably OK. This could indicate a carb or fuel pump problem.
2- If it doesn't fire, check out the points, condenser, coil, distributor cap and rotor. Look for condensation inside the cap. Check that the high tension wire from the coil to distributor is in good shape and not touching the engine or any brackets,etc.
3- Verify that your timing is correct. You may have a timing train problem (Worn or broken).
4- The distributor may have come loose and changed positions. Check for proper timing.
5- It may be a compression problem. If it has set long enough for the oil that coats the cylinder walls to drain down, you won't have enough compression to allow firing. Check your compression and if this seems to be the case, remove the spark plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil, or similar light weight oil into each cylinder. When it starts, it will smoke for a few minutes, but that will go away.
