I have Passat 1999. the gearbox is automatic. There is aknock just when the Transmisson change from two to three . I changed the solenoids before two months nearly and reprogrammed the transmission and it was ok. before few days the knock appeared.I'm wondering why this problem when the transmisson change from two to three.

  • Put a friction additive in your transmission. You can get it a local parts store. It's about 7 ozs. per bottle and maybe $10use tops for it.
  • VW Passat has multiple complaints about these transmission messing up starting around the 15,000 mile - 20,000 mile mark on there odometer.
  • Reports of the transmission itself being replaced as well as the valve body. Both require extensive transmission repair knowledge.
  • There are really only a couple options here. A transmission fluid flush/filter change. A friction additive may quiet enough to be suitable for you. The other option is going to be some major transmission work. If it is under an extended warranty then get it fixed right away. VW did may warranty repairs on these transmission but did not feel the need to issue a Service Bulletin to let consumers know they could get a free repair or replacement. Now because of that Passat cars from the mid to late 90's are having transmission issues all over, but most of the cars are long since out of warranty, leaving the consumer holding the bag.

    • Yea, try the friction additive for transmissions and see if that helps. It usually does.

    • The gears inside the transmission become worn and sometimes defective. This causes knocks of clunks. Depending on what gears are going out this is when you will hear it. Weather automatic or manual the clutch can go bad to but this would be indicated by trouble shifting in all gears rather than just 2nd to 3rd. A friction additive may help quiet things a bit. Many people avoid a hefty transmission repair bill with the aid of a friction additive.

    • In short you have some worn or defective gears in the 2nd to 3rd area of your transmission. The friction additive may help. If it continues then you will need to have it repaired at a certified transmission repair shop.

If second and third gears are the only gears you hear the knocking noise in, then the bearing on the main shaft at the rear housing is going bad. The only way to repair this is to pull the trans out and apart as it is inside the trans.
