Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 I6 with about 155k miles that is having intermittent issues. I just recently had to replace my muffler because of the car backfiring. This problem doesn't happen often but, it happened 3 weeks ago and then again today. The first time it happened the car was sputtering/backfiring and would not accelerate unless the pedal was pushed to the floor. I unhooked thebattery for a minute and it started and ran fine for a while. Now, it seems that quick acceleration, like entering the freeway, and slower speeds like exiting the freeway, seem to bring it on. The car seems to lose engine power and sputters. Any suggestions?

Converter is fine, I just had a muffler put on so I'm sure the guys at the shop would have noticed anything funny. It's been a day and a half with no issues so I'm still not sure what to do. Whatever it is, it's not dead yet and will eventually completely fail. I was just hoping to find out before it actually happens. I'm going to take it to the store and get it coded for a better idea of what's going on. I'm wondering if it's the fuel pump or filter? The trucks a 97 but, I've only had it a few years and I don't know how much of it was mantained or replaced by previous owners. Allot of the truck appears to be original.

From what you posted,it may be a few different problems.BUT.The 1st thing I would look at is the cat/converter may be blocked.Hey.It may not be.But look at that before you spend any money on other stuff.I just thought. How is your air filter.Take it out and take the car for a short run and see how it goes. This may show what is wrong.Hope this helps

Have it checked with a computer diagnostics. It sounds like it could be a bad sensor, quite possibly your oxygen sensor. A bad sensor could cause the computer to think your engine needs more fuel.

What a funny set of events.Of course the tail pipe is clear(you would have checked that)The only other thing it might be is the cat/converter is blocked.New muffler is allowing a heap of air through and it suddenly clears and the bang. They do block up so it may be worth getting it checked.Hope this helps

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.
