Its suppose to move up to 1/2", it is spring loaded!! Now if its squealing or chirping at startup or when the engine is revved, the tensioner is probably worn and needs replacing along with the belt!!

So if I change the belt and it still squeals I should change the tensioner also?

(1999 pontiac grand prix 3100 v6) how do I remove and replace my serpentine belt successfully?

Instructions Things You'll Need
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • Metric socket kit
  • New serpentine belt
    • 1

Park the Pontiac in a safe work area and open the hood.

    • 2

Inspect the top of the black plastic cover that surrounds the fan for the serpentine belt routing diagram. This diagram has the instructions for installing the new serpentine belt around the accessory pulleys.

    • 3

Inspect the front of the engine and locate the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner on the 1999 Pontiac model vehicles is located between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley. The tensioner has a pulley on one end with a bolt head in the center of the pulley. Use the bolt head to rotate the tensioner.

    • 4

Turn the tensioner counterclockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. Pull the belt out from under the tensioner pulley with your other hand. Then, slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops.

    • 5

Pull the belt out of the other remaining pulleys. Then, pull the belt out of the engine bay and lay it on the ground.

    • 6

Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley. Then, route the new belt around the other remaining pullleys by using the serpentine belt routing diagram for instructions.

    • 7

Rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise with the breaker bar and socket. Then, slide the new belt under the tensioner pulley. Slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops. The tensioner pulls all of the slack out of the belt and brings the new belt to the proper tension. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner pulley.

    • 8

Inspect the new belt to ensure that it is seated inside of all the accessory pulleys as directed by the diagram. Then, crank the engine and allow it to run for about 15 seconds. Turn the engine off. Inspect the belt again once more to ensure that
the belt is still around each pulley. Close the hood.

How do i install serpentine belt on 1999 Gran Am Se 3.4l engine

Click on the following Link. It has the Serpentine Belt you will need.

The standard rule to removal the Serpentine Belt:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Rotate/Move the Tensioner away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.

3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.

http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/year/1999/make/pontiac/model/grand_am/1999_pontiac_grand_am_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm

Standard Rule for putting it back on:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

How do a change a water pump on a 2001 pontiac grand am 4cyl please?

To change the water pump on the 1.8 or 2.0 4cyl is a complex project. The water pump is driven by the timing belt which means you have to remove the timing belt cover. Once youve done that you will need to release the tension on the timing belt make sure you have aligned the timing marks on both the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets before loosing the timing belt and be sure you do not move them while the timing belt is off and be sure they do not move while putting the belt back on. The tensioner will have to be locked down either before or after taking it out if after you will need to compress the tensioner and stick a small drill bit through the holes that way when you install it back all you have to do is pull the bit out and the tensioner does the rest. Once the belt is loose then you can remove the water pump and install the new one.

1 have a 1992 pontiac grand prix, 3.4L and i need to change out the power steering pump. since the pump is on top of the engine, it should be simple. How do i take off the serpentine belt?

There is a spring laded tensioner on the left (as you look at the belts) there should be a 9/16" boss that a wrench fits on, push or pull and it will release the tension to remove the belt.
