You check the trans fluid while the engine is running. The dipstick will be going into the trans. When you pull the dipstick out wipe it, put it back in then pull it back out. There will be an area of xxxxx or /////. This is your safe area. Use the same spout the dipstick goes in to fill with trans fluid by using a funnel.

Temp. gauge don't move past half on 1996 VW Jetta

Sounds normal. If the gauge moved further over, it would indicate an overheating problem, wouldn't it? Check that engine is at normal operating temperature after it warms up. If it is running too cold, your thermostat might be stuck open.

My 1997 jetta 2.0 clutch stuck to floor while driving and now it wont take any gears

It is probably the clutch slave cylender, leaking fluid, add brake fluid and bleed the system and check for leaks then replace whatever is leaking, sometimes it leaks onto the floor of the car under the pedal.

1996 VW Jetta wont start

Check to see if it's getting gas or spray some starter fluid into intake. If it fires, change fuel filter first and try it without starter fluid. If it doesn't start then change fuel pump.

Where the plug for tranny on 96' jetta is located?

On the manual transmission you go through the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Its suppose to go 1/2 way up the teeth marks. Does it not say in the Chiltons manual? I can check when I get home.

Jetta 1999 transmission fluid

the fluid goes in through a plug in the top of the auto it is not recommended that you check it as it take a particular type of fluid that only VW uses and the transmission is not ment to be serviced.
if the car is having trouble taking of the transmition might be about to fail our it might be low on fluid sagest to your boy friend that he checks for leaks and if he find one take it into VW to get repaird.
unfortunatly these cars are expensive to fix and your average machanical minded person dose not have the corect service tools to do so
