Question about 2000 Nissan Xterra
The service engine soon light, or malfunction indicator light (MIL), illuminates when the PCM detects an emissions related problem with your vehicle. It will produce diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can be read with a OBD II code reader. Auto Zone will read the codes and tell you what they are free of charge.
If you don't feel like you are comfortable fixing your car, then take it to your local auto technician for them to diagnose and repair the issue.

Go to auto zone and they should read the code for free and point you in the the direction to fix your problems what ever code is first fix that first then do the next thing

when the service engine soon light is illuminated in your vehicle, it means that the on board self diagnostic system has detected a fault either in the engine, transmission, or accessory controls. when this light is illuminated, it means that there is a code stored in the vehicle memory which can be extracted with a code reader. any garage should be able to do this for you. good luck!

Usually takes quite a few starts before it will erase/reset itself, such as 50 on some vehicles. Can always return to autozone and ask to scan and erase, then see if it comes back.
