How do i find out the right gear ratio ring and pinion is for my 95 gmc half ton 4x4 is

Hello: Stand in front of the rear axle, facing the back of the truck, scrape off the paint and rust from the axle tube going to the right wheel. It should be stamped on the axle housing. Or you can count the teeth on the ring gear in the differential. (you have to remove the cover to do that.

97' gmc sierra 4x4 5.7 what could be the problem? Why would it say transmission componant slipping? What can i do to fix it?

if it is a 4l60e (most likely) the transmission will need to be rebuilt. The friction material (clutches) in the holding members which create each gear ratio is worn or burned is several locations.

Replaced rear axle on a gmc 1500 4by4 with a 3.42 gear ratio as the original .but I noticed that I have to accelarate more just to keep up with trafic, do I have to reprogram the on board computer?

As long as it's the same ratio, it shouldn't effect the computer. I would check the numbers on the rearend to make sure it is the same gear ratio. Or there maybe a problem with the replacement rear end. Is it a locking differential rearend?

What years all fit for a rear end on a 2003 gmc sierra 4x4

'99-'03 if it's the standard cab. But you'll need to look in the glove box for the options tag/sheet for the gear ratio because there are three different options: GU4=3:08 ratio, GU6=3:42, and GT4= 3:73. Pray that you don't have the GT4/3:73 because that's the hardest to find around me.

Want to change gears in rear end for posi traction in a 98 gmc25000 is this possible?

It is possible, you just have to know what gear ratio you have in your Sierra. I had issues with my son's rear differential and did the Salvage Yard and picked one up for $250.00 with less then 45,000 miles. Remember new cars end up at Salvage Yards also.

Here are the Pro code for the rear ends to your Sierra and you can match one up at a Salvage Yard.
GQ1 -- AXLE REAR, STD RATIO
GT4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 -- AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GU4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 -- AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 -- AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 -- AXLE REAR, LIMITED SLIP (POSI TRACTION)

HC4 -- AXLE REAR, 4.56 RATIO

Open Your glove box and look inside it. Should be a list of codes on the bottom.
Example: GU6 G80 According to that, you'll have a 3.42 posi

Good luck and keep me posted and call around Salvage Yards, there prices will differ from one to the next salvage yard and don't ask them for a posi rear end. The cost will you more, just search all the SUV's and look at the pro codes in the glove box. Hunt, most awd system SUV will have the G80 rear end.

Good luck and keep me posted.

The rear went out in my SUV and I need to know the gear ratio. I have another rear but need to know if it will work.

Hold one wheel. mark the other wheel. Turn the unlocked wheel two complete revolutions. Count the number of turns the yoke make in two revolutions of the unlocked wheel. 3 1/2 turns= 3.42 3 3/4 turns 3.73 and so on

Replace rear axel bearing on 4x4 5.3 Litre gas engine

Loosen differential cover and let oil drain. Remove cover, remove U lock from axel. Pull axel out. Remove bearing seal then bearing. Install new bearing, seal and reinstall axel. Reinstall U lock and new cover gasket. Fill with 75-90wt gear oil. Now I know that sound pretty straight forward. But there are some things to remember. The U lock can be difficult to remove sometimes. The most important thing is the seal, you will need to make sure it gets seated correctly and not torn when installing axel.
