You've got a power steering fluid leak. The noise is the power steering pump low on fluid. I would put some Lucas Power Steering treatment in the system and refill the fluid. It won't fix the leak forever, but it will recondition the seals and rubber and buy you a lot of time.

Noise when turning

Either your power steering fluid level is low, your power steering fluid needs to be replaced, or your power steering pump is failing.

If your not losing any fluid then sounds to me like your power steering pump is going out will need to be replaced

Whining noise

Change the transaxle fluid & add a bottle of Red Lubgard

Also do the Power Steering Fluid & add Lubegard to that

Still there-- I would guess the trans is failing

Chirping and leaking transmission fluid

If you are getting noises you are damaging the trans. Even in Park the parts spin and wear. There are external trans fluid lines which go to the radiator and they can rot out and you will quickly lose your fluid.

Check your Power steering fluid because it can be confused with the trans fluid. There are components like the rack and pinion which can also leak. The dry Power steering pump can chirp.

Is there a noise when the power stering pump is going out

Yes there is like a whinning noise that gets louder when you turn the wheel and kinda go's away when going straight. Have you checked the fluid level? It will do it when it gets low also. If it is full and making the noise it prob is.

Trans fluid is red/brown. Stick shows "Full". Noise when turning or going straight. Thank you Charles

Transmission fluid should be bright red. You need to get your transmission fluid changed. Also, the sound that you are hearing when turning and going straight could be your power steering pump going bad, or running dry. When the power steering fluid gets low, the power steering pump tries pumping air, making a growling/whining sound. Try checking your power steering fluid level.
Hope this helps,
Matt

I have a 1999 olds intrigue GLS with the 3.5 v6 in it. The last two times I've started it (to go to work and home), the steering wheel is locked for the first minute or two, and when i try to move it,...

IF OIL IS COLD OR LOW WHERE AIR GOT IN THE SYSTEM.SYSTEM NEEDS BLEEDING.IF FLUID GOT DRY LOW.BUT A FAULTY POWER STEERING WILL MAKE NOISES BEFORE FAILING.

Makes a whining sound when i turn the steering wheel

Check the level of power steering fluid, under the hood, it's labeled, it has a low/full line on the side. If it's low, that could be the easiest solution. The noise is usually caused by air in the lines. The noise will probably be more prominent if it is cold and when it warms up it should go away or be less noticeable. Unless you are losing power steering fluid or the steering becomes harder to control, it is not a problem to worry about. It's a very common problem with these vans. Most people just don't fix it unless the steering becomes difficult or the fluid leaks quite a bit. If that is the case you should take it to your mechanic because you might be losing fluid in the rack and that will need to be professionally repaired.

Told by gm dealer we need a new steering colum for our 2004 malibu maxx, $1,100.00,plus a rack because it is binding and leaking 586.00,plus a shaft 300.00? it has 140k miles. never in an accident all...

Very rarely does the steering column go.....It sounds like you have a power steering fluid leak somewhere or the rack and pinion went bad. Go to a small garage and have them look at it if you can't. But, don't tell them what the Dealer said! They just might confirm it and give you a better deal than the Dealer!!! Tell them you don't have alot of money and just let them find the problem...You will probably be surprised about the diagnosis this time. It might be something alot more simple to fix....and cheaper too! I sincerely hope that this was helpful for you. Take care and God bless.

No it doesn't hurt anything but the environment and the smog polices feelings. Power improvements from a free flowing pipe. no additional power going bigger except for more noise which might make you think it is faster
