Question about 1988 Honda Prelude

It cranks but wont start. Checked for spark with the lead plug wire from the coil to the distributor cap. No spark. I changed the coil still no spark. I've been told its my fuel pump. But I've tested it by squirting gas myself through the fuel injection chamber. Still wont start. So I don't think its fuel pump. Maybe something to cause it to spark may be the cause? Also I filled the gas tank with more gas and it seems the ain't workin, I had a quarter tank and added but it didn't rise at all. I'm thinkin if its the fuel pump cut off relay? I need help, please help me.

If you are sure there is no spark and you have replaced the coil,then the only other thing it could be is your spark control moduel.it works off your computer to tell your plugs when to fire..somettimes they go out only when they heat up and will start working again after they cool down,,but sometime they don"t give you any warning and just stop working all together.. would say you have a bad Spark Control Moduel.....it is pretty easy to fix, just make sure you use or buy the right tools to take it off , ask at the Auto parts store to get the right tool, and the right part..

I drove my 2004 Pontiac Montana mini van in rain and water and now wont start. It cranks but no turn over.Day 2 hasn't started, in past when drove in water went out but started next day.

If it cranks, it is turning over. I think you mean it cranks, but doesn't start.

Buy a can of WD40, the 'WD' is an abbreviation of 'Water Displacement', and was recipe/formula number 40.

Pull each spark plug cap in turn and spray the spark plug neck, and inside the spark plug cap. DON'T pull them all at once in case you lose the order

Then follow the spark plug leads to the distributor, this is a joiner for all your spark plugs and the power from the coil. The cap comes off with 2 clips. Spray inside the cap and the lightly, the bottom part. Pull the leads from the top of the distributor in turn, and spray the cap and the cover to the wire. DON'T pull them all at once in case you lose the order. The centre lead goes to the ignition coil. or coils, spray those too.

Now try and start it. The WD40 treatment should protect the electrics for a few months.

If that doesn't work, you need to check the condition of the spark plugs and if the gap is correct. And if that doesn't work, it is time to call a friendly mechanic.

How do i get a spark on a 1987 cutlass salonI it crank but no spark...it keeps crankin but it wont start...wat could be da problem???


if the coil is known to be good check in the distributor cap whether power is getting there. if it is there must be something wrong with the spark leads.
Essentially you must work backwards from the spark plug tips towards the battery until you find where the transmission of power breaks down. So check for a spark at the plug tips.
if no power check the centre of the distributor cap, and if no power check the coil. at some point you will find power, the problem then, must be between the place you find power and the next step that should go but does not

Replaced bad fuel pump, installed new relay and fuel filter, engine turns over but is not firing on..... positive the fuel pump is pumping gas and checked to see if gas was going thru fuel filter. Tried...


Hi, Ok you have confirmed that it's not a fuel problem. You need to check for spark. Pull the coil wire off of the coil(secondary lead-looks like a spark plug wire) Have some one crank it over and listen for a popping sound. IF yes, spark is at the coil, that means all ignition sensors are working. Next check for spark at ends of wires after cap. IF no replace cap and rotor. IF yes remove a couple spark plugs and check for fouling(wet, fuel etc...) IF yes replace or clean plugs and retest for starting. IF no spark is present at coil you need to scan computer and watch for rpm signal. IF no rpm signal, replace crankshaft sensor with OEM delco part. BIGGEST problem with these engines is Cap and Rotor burn out.

I have a Mazda astina 323 94 model it cranks but won't start doesn't seem to be any spark from the leads I have recently changed the leads , Im guessing it's the coil and distributor cap please help


1 remove the cable from the coil to the distributor.
check this agains earth, when you turn the engine over.

if spark, suspect rotor arm is not setting spark to each spark plug lead.
open distributor and clean the rotor arm with a cloth or wire wool
not sand paper as this will take off too much and cause a problem

2 check inside distributor for moisture. spray inside with WD40 or equiventy water repelent.

3 if not spark at coil open distriutor cap and with ignition on, open and close points in distributor with a screw driver and check coil again against earth again if you get sparh, problem is points not opening and closing.

4 turn over engine with distributor cover removed to see if rotor arm is moving if not then cam drive to distributor is defective. this controls points and rotor arm.

if rotor arm turning and spark at points but no spark at coil suspect Low tension wiring or coil needs replacement.

You must have the plug leads in the wrong place on the distributor.
Firing order is 1-3-4-2
Remove the distributor cap. There is a tiny mark on the aluminum body where the cap sits on it. Turn the motor clockwise by hand until the rotor lines up with this mark. #1 plug lead should be in the distributor cap hole closest to the rotor in a clockwise direction.
If the motor still does not start rotate all the plug leads 180 Deg.

If you have a 12 volt test light put the point on the positive lead to
the coil and the ground lead to a good ground ( Negitive side of battery ). Then turn the key on. If the test light comes on then you have power to the coil. With power to the coil confirmed have someone crank the engine and put the test light on the negitive side of the coil. The light should flash at a rapid steady rate. If not then your pickup in the distributor may be bad. If no power to coil with key on or when cranking you may have a bad ignition switch.
Another way to test for spark is to remove the coil wire from the dist cap and hold the end close to a ground ( 1/4 inch away) and
have some one crank the engine. If you get a good spark but no
spark to the spark plugs you may have a cracked dist cap or a bad rotor. If no spark at coil wire use a wire in place of the coil wire to check for spark. You may have a bad coil wire. Good luck. Neil W.

I had the same problem last year mine turned out to be a crank sensor I don't know if that is your problem for sure mine wouldn't send any spark from the coil to the spark plug replaced crank sensor inside distributor and fired right up the dealership called it a cam sensor my book called it a crank sensor either way its in the distributor
