Hi,
When there is oil in the water, if you are sure of this, it can only be caused by two ways:

  1. You have a cracked engine block. This is a rare case, but presents itself more with modified cars that are being pushed to their limits. This would require your engine block to be remachined and repaired at a professional shop.
  2. The more likely solution, especially on a car that is 10+ years old, is a bad head gasket. The head gasket is a seal between your engine (with the oil) and your radiator fluid (which cools your engine, and contains water and/or antifreeze depending on how you keep it). This can be fixed a number of ways: You can try head gasket repair solution from a local auto store (though this is merely a temporary fix), or you can replace the head gasket with a lengthy DIY or bring it to a shop to do it.
Sorry it wasn't better news, but I hope this helps. If it does, please accept and rate the solution! You can leave a testimonial or contact me with any more questions you may have. Thanks for using FixYa!

On the A4, there's another way - an internal diaphragm failure on the oil cooler. It's not unheard of and both coolant and oil flow through it. It's relatively inexpensive and not tough to change.

Oil and water in your crankcase means one of three things you could have blown a head gasket, cracked or warped head,or a cracked block. You are going to have to take it in to a shop to have then take it apart to find out which problem it is.

This is indicative of a blown head gasket or a crack in the head or block. You are looking at a major engine overhaul and possible replacing the engine. Sorry to have to tell you this bad news. It is going to be expensive to fix.

Oil mixing in resevoiur

the most common fault for this is the oil cooler, where the oil filter screws on ,these fail inside and allow oil and water to mix, usually in the coolant system, not a big job or cost to fix, unusual for head gaket to blow on these engines.I worked with Audi for 15 years and cannot remember any A4's that had a head gasket issue.

Oil in the water audi a3 tdi

The most probable cylinder head gasket is damaged !!!
But first check the oil / water cooler placed at the bottom side of oil filter. It could also be cracked. Maybe due an engine overheated.

Audi a4 mixing water and oil together hissing,grey/brown foam

That is not true oil and water being mixed can come from many different places. Such as a bad radiator which would cause transmission oil to mix with the water also alot of audi's have a water cooled oil cooler which are a very common cause of oil being mixed with with water. These type of oil coolers are located under you oil filter. They have water lines hooked to them which cools the oil and when they go bad the water and oil will mix. So dont be convinced that its your head gaskets it could be but not as likely. You can pressure test your oil cooler to see if this is the problem just romove it an plug one off the inlet or with rubber plug which can be purchased at you local hardware store (I found mine at ace hardware in there specialty drawers where they have all there bolts) then attach a air hose to the other outlet pressureize the system and place it in a bucket of water. this should tell you if the oil cooler is bad but be careful not to ove3r pressureize the cooler this could damage it and caust it to leak. 15 to 30 psi should be plenty.
