I had this problem many times on our 2003 Pontiac Montana. Bulbs were not working on the brake lights. It is also somehow wired to the cruise control, so it will not work also. After many bulb replacements, I went online and purchased two new light housings for each side of the rear lights. No issues from that point forward.

Hopefully you didn't install new bulbs, when the
old ones were okey. I would keep the new ones
& put the old ones back ,so you have new spares
for the future

Check under the dash on the back of the brake
pedal arm for the brake light sw
It may just be loose or need to be adjusted

When I turn my lights on my tail lights work but when I hit my brakes the don't light up I have a 2001 vw beetle????

the brake lights don't light up or the taillights don't light up? the brake lights are brighter than the tailights so the tailights won't show up whenbrakes are applied. if no lights work when brakes are applied then check for a bad ground at the light assembly.

Brake light does not work after replacing bulb

It's usually the brake pedal is sticking or you might just need to adjust the pin when you apply your brakes it makes those lights stays on. sometimes you can spray a wd-40 and it'll go away.. this pin is located on top of the brake pedal when you look underneath the steering wheel column or panel....hoped i helped you on this one...
The brake light switch may be either stuck or broken.

Get down in the driver's footwell, and follow the brake pedal arm up under the dash. Look for the switch (see link for a picture), see if the moving arm on it moves freely as the pedal is depressed. If not, try spraying some lube on it (WD-40 or the like) and working it to get it to move freely.

If the arm won't move freely, or the lights don't turn on even when you move the arm, the switch should be removed and replaced.

Brake lights don't work. Bulbs, fuses and brake light switch all okay. Center brake light works and the running lighs work.

  • If there are no brake lights period the check the stop switch (brake light switch)
  • This is attached to the upper part of the brake pedal itself. Should be a little wire off of it. When that goes bad the brake lights will not work at all.
  • Please note that the fuse for "brakes" is ABS only and has no bearing on the brake lights themselves working.
