Question about GMC Yukon

1 Answer

1997 GMC Yukon 4-wheel drive electronic switch type. When the truck is cold the truck will go from 2hi to 4hi. When the truck is cold the truck will go from 4hi to 4lo. When the truck is hot or warm the lights will continue to blink and does not go into 4wheel drive. During the blinking lights it will allow me to try and put it from 4Hi to 4Lo and I hear engagement but the light continues to blink. I think the actuator is working ok??? 5.7 liter regular gas motor.

Dave,
The problem your are speaking about could be a few things. All things that are somewhat common to go bad on Chevys/GMCs. Each one of the cars I worked on had a different problem. I have changed the switches, the 4wd solenoid, and TCM on different trucks. IMO the TCM location in the passenger kick panel is a poor location allowing water and other passenger debris to get into it. Once water gets in that area you can imagine already what occurs. One of the cars the TCM bracket was rusted by the ground and eventually the weak ground fried it. The weird thing is the TCM would allow it to shift sometimes and not other times or partially engaging causing the wonderful light to blink rapidly. What I have found of some time with these trucks is pushing the button to change the truck to two wheel drive and driving a few feet in reverse helps ease the change.

So you can start with a new switch that pops in and out of the dash in a few mins. Can get one on ebay for under 25 dollars. Although, I personally would take off the kick panel and take a look at the TCM. If you see any rust around it, my money would be on that.

Good luck

How do i know when it is in 4x4 . where must the lever be for it not to be in 4x4. no the lever is has got 2lo, 2hi n 4lo and 4hi. when you drive where must the it be, and is there lights on the bash that...

Hi, 2hi is your normal driving selection, this is NOT in 4WD mode. Both 4lo and 4hi is for 4 wheel driving, 4lo is used in extreme conditions and will gear the vehicle down to a very slow speed with maximum traction at the wheels, 4hi is for general 4 wheel driving in rough terrain, if you have lights on the dash than it will come on when you change gears, hope this help

4Hi won't switch back to 2Hi

First try hitting the 2HI when in nuetral. If that doesn't work put the vehicle in reverse and hit the 2HI switch and tap the brakes at the same time. Usual if you do this, when you put it into drive it will release.

Electronic tranfer case switches are not working, what could be the problem? The vehicle is in 2 wheel hi now and when I push the 4 hi button nothing happens...when I start the vehicle, all three switches...

check the trasfercase shift control module and wiring
it's located on the passenger side
remove the carpet thresh hold
remove the kick pannel they are held on by clips
the module is behind the kick pannel
disconnect the module harness and see if it is corroded if so you need to replace the connector and the module
let me know if thats not it but i have done lots

if i am not mistaking these have the vacuum module on the front differential check it it is probably bad common problem on these trucks from 96 and up if it is the electronic type it could be one of three things the switch on the dash, motor on transfer case, or the electronic module for the 4 wheel drive.
