Question about 2001 Ford Taurus
Glad to see that you are looking to learn more about the car you just recently purchased. Overall, the misalignment should not impact the drive ability, but instead only the visual appearance of it being a bit out of the gear. Fuses would not control this. Fuses actually stop voltage spikes from destroying the wiring in the car. The bulbs would simply illuminate what you are looking at on the shifter.
Now to answer your question, there is simply an insert in the location you are looking at. Over time, this insert moves around from typical wear and tear. If it really bothers you, you could take it to a local mechanic and ask them to adjust it for you.
Good luck and enjoy the new car.

You can get a .pdf version of the 2001 Ford Taurus Owner's Manual at: http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/OwnerGuidePage&year=2001&make=Ford&model=Taurus
It has instructions and guides for finding and replacing the fuses in a 2001 Ford Taurus. It starts on page 146-147.
Always use the specific Owner's Manual for the correct Model Year of a Ford or Mercury vehicle. I recently purchased a 2001 Ford Taurus, and had thought that I could use the Owner's Manual from a 1999 Mercury Sable from a friend. BUT, I figured out that each model year can be very different (before any serious damage happened.) Good luck.
