It could be a number of things like a short in the wiring harness but a simple test would show maybe the alternator is wore out or shorted. Start car after leaving the negative battery cable loose enough to take off. If you disconnect it and car dies it is the alternator. Hope this is all it can be as wiring problems can be very expensive and thanks for using FixYa.

Alternator/Electrical??

check the connection on your battery terminal ends. if they are loose or corroded that could explain the intermittent no spark. also could be a short somewhere but id check the terminals first. I had that problem once and the car did all sorts of weird things. airbag light, check engine light, randomly wouldnt start until i would mess with the battery.

You have a possible issue with the voltage regualtor inside of your alternator.
You can drive to Autozone & have them test for under voltage & overvoltage condition, appears to be a voltage regulator failing.

Let me know how it turns out for ya!
Good luck to ya....

Sounds like you have a loose connection on a battery cable. loosen the bolt and pull off each end and clean, then replace. When you clean them, make sure you get down to clean metal.

no - an alternator will NOT cause the engine to overheat like you have stated.

My 94 honda accord ran hot and now wont start

Sorry. Could also be a cracked head or block. Take the spark plugs out and see if they are wet.  Charge battery and turn engine over with the coil grounded and the sparkplugs out. If water flyes out of any cylinder, you may have to disassemble the engine.
