Question about 1986 Ford F 350

1 Answer

I have a 1986 f350 diesel , the batteries seem yo be discharging when thevtruck is running. I can leave it sit for weeks and starts right up. If I drive around and try to start batteries to low to start truck. I replaced external voltage regulator but it's still doing the same thing. Could it be the alternator?

have you checked the belt(s) for tightness? sometimes a tensioner will break without actually throwing the belt off. it will seem to rotate but not move quite as fast as the engine is going. and the noise of the diesel will hide the sound of a bad bearing/ pulley.

Yes there may be a Diode that's shorted. I'd replace the alternator.
Note: I've had very limited results replacing the regulators on ford alternators over the years and now just replace the complete unit.

remove the glow plugs and check for hydraulic lock
diesel can leak into the combustion chambers and will not allow the piston past tdc
removing the glow plugs allows any fluid / water to escape

sounds like you have a faulty ignition switch or a burnt fusible link(located on the right fender next to the battery).

Have a 01 Tahoe with new red top and fairly new alternator. It charges at about 14v. But if I leave the Tahoe set for a week, it wont start.Where do I look for a voltage leak. The Tahoe seems to be working...

Start with the basics; Is the reason the car does not start is that the battery is discharged after a week of sitting or a case that it won't start without a jump although the battery is still good. If the car just does not start after sitting then try the following; Pull the negative battery cable and let the car sit overnight. Reconnect the cable in the morning and see if it starts. If it does then you are looking for something that is pulling current from the battery. Could be lots of things; light on in the glove box or trunk, a short in a wire, etc. You can try pulling a couple of fuses each evening and in the morning, replace the fuses and see if the car will start after sitting. If it continues to discharge the battery then try another set of fuses. The day it starts after sitting then you have narrowed the electrical system that is discharging your battery. Focus on those systems

When we turn key car is dead. Car has been sitting for 2 months.

replace your battery, a battery discharges every day you dont run the alt. to charge it up... after a week or 2 weeks the battery would be dead, just from a car sitting not being started... if you are not using the vehicle, it is a good thing to replace the battery, and every couple days just start the car up and let it run a while to charge the battery.... if you are going to have to leave the car for a while without starting it, then disconnect the battery, and remove it from the vehicle... you can buy a cheap trickel charger for the battery when it is out that will keep it charged till you decide to put it back in.... hope this helps you...

Shut 05 Ford f350 diesel off wont start

when you get a code the PCM will keep that code and till it get easased. you need a scaner or disconect your battery for 1h. this should clear your codes. when the battery is disconected don't sit in your can. the air bags may deploy if you hit the steering collem or a sensor to hard. just let it sit. reatach your battery then try to start your truck. if the codes are still pressent you make need let the car sit for longer or bit the big one and get the shop to do it.

2004 diesel hard to start when cold

It sounds more like the glow plugs, the older models had trouble out of the module, but the 6.0 is pretty safe from all those problems. And don't forget to use the correct fuel additive for diesel engines, it helps .
