Question about 2000 Mercury Cougar

Open Question

I have a 2000 mercury cougar v6 2.5l and im trying to find out what are the symptoms of a broken shifter cable. my passenger side shifter cable will only move in and out a very tiny amount. it feels like its jammed or broken. but im not sure. i was shifting from a stop to 1st, then second and third and when i went to fourth my shifter felt zero resistance and flopped around and i was still in 3rd gear. i could not move the shifter left or right. only up and down with incredible ease. after taking off the middle console and looking at the shifter cables, the drivers side cable moves freely with the motion of the shifter. the passengers side however doesnt move. i had to take the bushing off that connects the passenger side cable to the shifter to get the shifter to move left and right. so i'd like to know if i have a broken cable or if its something to due with the transmission? thanks.

Your problem is in the transmission. There are a number of things that could cause this but typically start by checking the fluid level, if that is good do a fluid and filter change. If that fails to correct the problem or you find a lot of metal in the pan, it will look like a gray goo in the bottom of the pan, have the transmission rebuilt and repaired.

My passenger seat on my 2001 mercury cougar wont lean forward so passengers can get in the back seat. can this be fixed or do I need a new lever?

there is a wire or rod connected to this lever which may be broken or the plastic keeper broke and the rod fell out..need to see if this can be acessed and repaired or if a replacement seat from a tow yarsd is in order..good luck..

I bought a 2000 mercury cougar that does not have a manual .

if this is a manual car with an mtx 75 gear shifter is stuck more than likely the cable linkages broke. i believe you have the 2 end pieces one black one white. jack the car up on the driver side take the wheel off and take a look at the two lines running together more than likely the white one broke they are prone to break its only cost like 20 dollars. let me know what you find. the next thing i can think of is that the bottom bolt on the shift tower broke causing loss of all gears the bolt usually falls into the transmission if that is what happen do not start the car is it may send the broken bold flying out of the transmission casing.
it definitely sounds like a shifter cable issue

i would need more info but it sounds like your trans shifter cable is out of adjustment ; you need to carefully with the brake on and the car idling; move your trans shifter cable to all positions to check for forward and reverse.
Make sure car is chalked or raised of the ground ,
