There should be low, neutral, high and possible 2 wheel high. the low position is causing the motor to go to fast. try to get it to shift into the high or best 2 wheel high position.

Freelander is permanent 4 wheel drive. The switch on the gear lever is for downhill decent control. These are usually diconnected when there is a problem with one of the ABS wheel sensors not working, causing three warning lights on the dash to display. Google Freelander Three Amigos.

I would like to know if it is possible to unlock the differential on my 1998 landrover discovery so that I dont have to be in 4wd all of the time.

Short answer no! The vehicle is designed to be in 4x4 mode all the time. Long answer is Yes! But you will have to remove the Front propshaft and select Diff lock on (Small gear lever in front of main gear lever). When the diff lock is on a green light will illuminate on the dash near the speedo. This is not recommended for long duration, but is pefectly OK for a short trip on road to get you out of a fix, or for fault finding.

Check engine coolant came on computer when I turned car on, not sure where it is... also which brand coolant, type I should get... I can;t find the manual

You can check the coolant under the hood, located on the drivers side, front corner. The manual says to fill with blue anti-freeze, but was informed at Autozone that most new coolants will mix with any color. I've used Peak 50/50 in my 03 Rover which mixes with any color.

try the simplesr first is the transfer lever actually in high or low if they dont get used much they get very stiff it may have got knocked into neutral by accident hence no drive give it a good shove back and forwards until you are sure it is high box

Gear box

Hi Steve, without knowing a bit more about your disco, ie, age, 200 or 300tdi, can you get all the gears when in 4x4 ?,it might be difficult to pinpoint your fault, but going on your first description i would say that the high range on your transfer box could be the problem. Do you have a local transmission repair workshop to you?, they should be able to confirm this for you
