Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima

I can start the car by bump starting it. I can't start it with the key. Replaced the starter, replaced the safety switch under the clutch pedal. Checked the fuses. WHAT NOW?

COULD BE WEAK BATTERY.REPLACE BATTERY CABLES IF OLD AS THE VECHICLE REPLACE BATTERY CABLES.

THERE IS A STARTER SOLENOID LOCATED UNDER THE HOOD ON THE RIGHT FENDER WELL. CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BATTERY VOLTAGE ON THE LARGE RED WIRE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RELAY. IF SO USE A TEST LIGHT ON THE SMALL TERMINAL, YOU SHOULD HAVE POWER TO THIS WIRE WHEN HELD IN START POSITION HAVE SOMEONE HOLD THE KEY IN START WITH CLUTCH PEDAL DEPRESSED WHILE YOU CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE RELAY WITH A TEST LIGHT. My mazda b2300 series pickup 2003 2.3 L. is not starting I turn the key and no contact or anything I cross the hot wires on the starter and it tries to crank but will not start can you help me please


My first guess would have been the clutch switch but that would not prevent the engine from starting.
Something is not making the circuit from the key to the starter solenoid and the coil or computer.
Assuming the key is turning the switch correctly, you would need to troubleshoot the circuits with a meter coming out of the key switch. Its possible the key lock is not actually turning the switch.

Won't start


So it's a no crank condition? Do dash lights, gauges, and everything else work when the car won't crank over? If so, buy a cheap $5.00 testlight, and when the car won't crank, pull the small black wire off the starter solenoid. While someone holds the key in start (cranking) position and clutch pedal depressed, see if the black wire has power as it should. (Ground the testlight and just touch the wire's end terminal. If powered, the testlight will light up.) If power there, then the starter solenoid is failing. Toyota starters are very good units, but the solenoid's internal contacts get old and pitted.
If no power at the black wire, then the start circuit from ignition switch to clutch safety switch (on the clutch pedal) to starter relay to starter solenoid will have to be diagnosed. To double-check: take a single battery jumper cable and put it on the positive battery post connection. Put the other end of the jumper cable on the solenoid terminal where black wire was removed. Key can be off. Make sure car is in neutral, brake set. If starter now operates, solenoid is O.K., and it is a problem in the start circuit, -ignition switch, neutral start switch, or in the wiring.
Now find a grounding place for testlight under the dash. When car won't crank, check for power coming out of ignition switch on the black wire with white stripe. This is the start wire for the starter solenoid. Key must be in crank position. Wire shoud be powered-ignition switch is working. If no power, switch is failing. You can do the same for the clutch start switch-it's a simple switch, that when clutch is depressed switch is closed and passes power on from ignition switch to the starter relay (thus allowing power to the starter solenoid). Black wire, red stripe-this is wire from clutch switch to starter relay. When key is in crank, clutch depressed, this wire should be hot.
With me so far? Still haven't found a problem, or any loose connections? Next and last is the starter relay. It is located under dash, close to gas pedal, but under the center console, just forward and left of gear shifter. It can be tested and the wiring diagnosed there, but relays are cheap, so just swap in another and see if that helps.
If you have tried everything, and still no help, you could try a new wire from the relay to the starter solenoid. This is that black wire we started with. Older toyotas sometimes have a problem with degraded wiring not passing enough current to operate the starter

Start by checking the switch above the clutch pedal ... I have seen where they come loose, brake or move and when you push in the clutch it doesn't engage the safety switch all the way.

The clutch has to be in for my 85-s10 blazer to start and it wont start unless i use a screwdriver on the starter. any answers?


Your diagram is below. Since the starter jumps at the solenoid, the problem would be the ignition switch, the clutch interlock, or the wiring. Check for power at the yellow wire that goes to the switch under the clutch pedal when the key is turned to start. If you have power on the red wires to the ignition switch but no power coming out when the key is turned to start, replace the switch. If you DO have power on the yellow wire, try bypassing the interlock by pulling the connector off and connecting the terminals inside the connector with a large paperclip. If that doesn't work, the purple wire from the interlock to the starter solenoid may be broken. Please let me know if you have more questions.

The car sat up awhile. The battery died. We replaced the battery but the car still won't start. Everything comes on. The starter was tested and it was fine. What is the problem?

CLUTCH POSITION SWITCH IF THE CAR HAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION.3. BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH. MANY NEWER VEHICLES HAVE A SWITCH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL ANDIF THE PEDAL IS NOT DEPRESSED WHILE TRYING TO START THE CAR, THE CAR WON'TSTART. ANOTHER POSSIBLILITY IS THE SECURITY SYSTEM. DOES THE CAR HAVE ASECURITY CHIP IN THE KEY? THESE ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON REASONS THAT A CARWON'T START FOR NO APPARENT REASON. HOPE THIS HELPS.

i have two things that come to mind first of which is your neutral safety switch ...its located on the clutch pedal ..its to prevent the car from being started in gear it may not be working correctly and wont let power to the started when you turn the key...most likely the problem...the other thing if thats not it you may need to check the ignition switch...

Depending on what vehicle you have, verify that your starter is getting 12 volts when the key is turned to Start. If no voltage is present, you may have a bad Starter Relay, Starter Solenoid, Ignition Switch, or Clutch Safety Switch.

  1. Check that your starter is getting 12 volts when the key is turned to Start.
  2. Check the Starter Relay to see if it clicks.
  3. Check the Ignition Switch for Continuity.
  4. Check the Clutch Safety Switch for Continuity.

Clutch cranks my car


I suspect the starter solenoid,mounted on the starter was 'stuck' on the engaged position.operation in the condition you describe has caused it's failure.starter needs to be replaced.

Starter not work but can bump start nissan sunny "N" reg


Rock your car back and forth. The starter is stuck between teeth. I had a jeep that had the same problem. It had teeth missing on the starter motor. This seemed to do the trick
