Check lights have been with us for some 30 years,
so I guess your not into why

Have you checked to see if you have any codes?

Code related issues get fixed first

As far as an EVAP System problem you
asked about, we have no codes & you still
need a repair shop to diagnose the issue,
what ever it may be.

You will only have performance issues if you
have a large leak & only when the purge valve
is commanded open to draw in fuel vapor from
the tank to the engine.

To be honest, it is hard to tell right now. There are many things that can cause your check engine light to come on. When it does come on, this means the computer has detected a problem with the vehicle. Every car has this system. Anytime it is on, you can usually get a code number off the computer scan. The hookup is under the dash in most cars. You can buy a cheap one for around 50 dollars at most auto part stores. If you do buy one, you may need to find what each code means. If you don't own one or you can't get to one, you can take it to Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts to get your vehicle scanned. Most places do not charge for the scan. Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts do not charge when your check engine light is on. They will be able to scan it for you and give you the codes. They will let you know what it says and what parts you will need as well. if you ask. If your check engine light is flashing, this means there may be internal engine failure. If this is your case, get it scanned as soon as possible. The longer you go with the light on, the greater the chance you have to make the problem worse. Some of the newer vehicles has this system already built in. You will need to know sequence though, to make the code appear.

I had blinking vsc code and check engin light on. Took it to a dealer who ran diagnotic. Dealer said gas cap has failed and new charcoal canister is needed. Since the high cost of latter, I simply...

Don't worry about that light, if performance and fuel economy is good. The light is still a fault from the evaporative canister.. It should not affect performance. Just make sure the fuel cap is snug. Just perform The ODBII scan periodically to catch any future problems. The vacume diaphragm for canister purge should be unplugged and the vacume hose plugged. This will avoid engine from sucking fuel into the engine due to a ruptured diaphragm in the canister

Where is the purge canister on 03 s10

The canister is usually mounted on one of the inner fenders. Sometimes it is under the bed near the gas tank.
If the hose is disconnected from the canister the check engine light should be on and a code in the computer for the EVAP system.

I have 2000 ford contour my engine light came on i took my car and got a reading which said failed canister vent solenoid. what does that mean. Is it serious

The solenoid is for an emissions device called an evaporative loss canister. It would probably not affect how the engine performs but it would have to be replaced to pass a smog test.

Okay no leaks so this means the vent valve is closing, how did you get valve to close? if there are no leaks and vent valve is closing and sealed when you smoke tested it then i would say to replace the purge valve, this is easy to change and not costly, just a dealer part or maybe you can find on the web, hope this helps.
