This is most likely a break down in the security anti theft aspect of the vehicle. When the computer can't read the keys transponder or chip properly, it goes into anti theft mode and turns off the starter. Check out this link for info and answers. You can fix this yourself.

Try checking your ignition fuse. Check your battery and make sure it is good. Check your wires and terminals and make sure they are cleaned and tight. If you do have interior lights, it may be the starter or startr solenoid.

I have a 98 Pontiac Bonneville. When it starts you have to rev it up to clear it out, then it runs fine. But if you shut it off 9 times out of 10 it wont start back up, it tries to turn over but it wont

If the vehicle has trouble turning over, with the starter trying hard to turn over, but not actually working at a good rate of speed, then I would check the amperage on the neg. or pos. battery cable using an ammeter.

If you have 75 to 125 Amps of draw, and the starter barely turns, then it is likely a bad starter.

Also, check the connections to the battery by removing them and wire brushing them until they are clean and shiny. Reinstall the battery cable ends to the battery.

If you have 0 to 2 Amps of draw on the starter, then the solenoid may not be engaging, in which case it's still a good idea to change the starter.

1998 pontiac bonneville will not start. good battery new alternator

Your starter may be bad. Try hitting the starter. Use a long heavy screwdriver. Place it on the starter and wack it a good time with a hammer. If the brushes are bad this will make contact again. Try to start car. This may or may not work all of the time. Chances are your starter is bad and needs replaced.
