Check the oil see if there is water in it, never really heard a knocking water pump how ever anything is possible. You can use a wooden broom stick to touch to different engine components to try and isolate the noise location. You can't get that stick to the water pump because of the belt I'm sure be very careful.

My 2000 Toyota Fourrunner made a super loud knocking sound when I was driving on the highway?

It is hard to say at this range. If a heavy knocking noise that gets louder if you rev up a bit, and it seems to keep time with the engine, you have a failed con-rod (big end) bearing, or less likely, a failed crank main bearing. A lighter knock may be a failed gudgeon pin (small end) bearing. Another possibility is that the engine has eaten a valve or 2.

A blown head gasket can make a noise but it is more like a 'chuff-chuff' sound, like a steam engine.

If the noise has nothing to do with engine revs, look for a loose road wheel or a failed axle bearing, but I doubt it is that.

If you decide it is the engine, the quickest way to investigate is to drain and remove the sump, and look at the big-end bearings. To investigate the valves you could use a borescope, before going to the trouble of removing the cylinder head.

I have a 2005 nissan maxima, while i was driving it died on me. Then a loud knocking noise from a rod started, now the car will barely run. How much to fix it?

to machine the crank and get another rod --set of big end and mains-- probably a rebore-- pistons --rings --labour Time off road- It will be cheaper to fit a reconditioned short motor so check around for one from an accredited engine remanufacturer.

1999 Firebird knocking then stall

Well CB....a knocking noise coming from the engine is never good news.

Typically any real ugly noise that stops an engine from running is catastrophic. With the info you provided...low oil pressure, excess oil in the pan, knocking engine sounds and a motor that will now, not turn over...sounds like a bent con rod caused by a failed main bearing.

The engine overheated so the first suspect is the cooling system, some engine designs require that the thermostat be installed with the vent or bypass hole in a certain position. Failure to position the thermostat properly can cause engine overheating.

Another cause of the dreaded knock is "Knocking and pinging" caused by a low fuel octane rating, carbon deposits on cylinder walls or incorrect spark plugs... all not good. I think you would have noticed if your motor was knocking and pinging for any extended period of time.

Excess oil in the pan gets frothed up by the crankshaft slapping it around and aerates the oil which decreases its shear strength, which is what keeps metal parts from contacting directly together.
This could ruin the main crankshaft bearings.

First thing I would do is remove all the spark plugs (to reduce engine compression) and place a socket on the crank pulley bolt and try to turn the engine over...you should be able to spin the crank....if you can't get the motor spinning..it's seized up.

Good luck !

Bad Water Pump??

sounds like the thermostat stuck closed, a water pump would not cause this problem, replace the T-stat.

Knocking noise in 3.8 lit 95 ford taurus

You can not put a liquid where metal is supposed to be. Just a general rule of thumb. The high RPM's had been too much for the engine, and A rod bearing, or rod knocking is about the same thing. Dont try the heavier oil thing, I hate when ppl suggest such stuff. Just replace the bearing, or in most cases and cost efficent, the engine.

Rod knock, water pump leak, clicks but wont turn over

A noisy water pump will eventually cause problems. Before it shattes insde the cooling system, causes overheatinig,& other problems, get rid of it.It may have to do with the "no start" but as for the slow windows and other issues that sounds like battery or ignition. One step at a time.
