there are a few possible causes for this
first thing is do not blame your bro. it is probably nothing that he has done, and just unfortunate that it went while he was driving.

first thing to do is check the air filter, and fuel filters, especially if he was driving anywhere where there may have been a lot of dust. the filters may just be clogged up.

second is to check that all of the vacuum pipes on the engine are secure and not leaking or broken. this is the most likely and quite easy to fix once you have found the culprit.

it may also be worth disconnecting the battery for an hour to reset the ignition control unit as well as newer units are "semi-intelligent" and learn driving styles. this can ocassionally lead to glitches like this when two people with different driving styles use a can for long runs. the unit goes back to default setting for a day or two until it relearns you driving style.

after checking these items, it may be worth getting a computer diagnostic done as there are many sensors on the engine, and things like the air flow sensor, that could cause these symptoms if faulty without setting of the warning lights on the dash.
without a diagnostic at this point, costs can escalate rapidly if you start randomly changing components. a diagnostic test should pinpoint the problem and could save you a lot of money in the long run.

please feel free to ask if you need any more information.

Auto Mits Legnum vr4 when put into drive or reverse engine shuts down. Is idling below normal. Neutral is just under the 1 but as soon as put into gear idle drops to zero.

Could be many things. Bad torqe convertor, bad idle air control valve, bad egr valve. So many things it could be. Id spend 60 bucks to get it diagnosed that way your not throwing needless parts at it. Hope this helps

97' 4runner (4cyl) stumbles (misses) under load

Factory plugs are not always the best tool for the application. In your case, you use the vehicle for something that would be deemed as heavier usage as per your question. What you need is to contact your local dealer or Auto parts store for platinum tip or double platinum tip plugs for a greater spark, o r you could replace with the recommended pluga and regap them for a greater spark...

Vr4 with miss and back fire under load

If this just started, maybe after a hard run, you may want to check your sparkplugs. I've melted the insulator on one of my plugs after a prolonged, spirited run causing same symptoms.

99 jeep wrangler 4.0 backfires and hesitates

Fairly common problem. Typical scenario is start vehicle, runs fine for 15 to 30 seconds and begins to backfire when placed under load as customer tries to drive vehicle. Flooring usually makes the problem go away. Usually does not throw a code.

Fix is to replace the upstream 02 sensor.
