Question about 1999 Lexus RX 300

1 Answer

I have a slight grinding sound when I sharply or slightly sharp turn. Sounds like it could be coming from whatever part actually turns the front wheels. Sorry about my car intelligence but this is the best I can give. Can you help? And, another problem, when I start the car, my car has a semi random problem. When started and in park, it either idols very low then dies and in order to get the car to bump up to normal idol, I have to gas it then put it into drive or reverse, then gun it in order to get it to not stall. Once it is running and in drive it is ok. It is only happening when I turn the car off and then start it again. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful help, Pamela

Does the grinding sound change pitch when you turn the vehicle left vs. right? As far as the other problem - does it happen at a cold start, like in the morning - or does it happen only have the vehicle has warmed up the first time?

    Answer to Autoclinictx question:
Grinding sound does not change in pitch although, it is louder with hard turning; example parallel parking. The grinding noise happens on both left and right turns.

    Second Answer to Autoclinictz:
The RPM/stalling problem happens randomly; cold, hot, warm.
When the RPM/stalling problem happens, the only way I have found to bump up the RPMs in order that it does not stall, is to gun it while it is park, (Note: if it is having the problem, it will not idol not even if I gun it, it may idol on its own if I gas it for a few minutes non-stop. This may or maynot work). In order to get it to work, if gasing it for a few minutes non-stop does not work, I then have to gun it, put it in drive or reverse then gun it again in order to get the rpms up enough for it to maintain the rpm. Once the proper rpm is reached, there is sort of a catching sound as if something connected so that it can now maintain the idol without further stalling.
It had not stalled once in gear and it is idoling normaly.
    Sorry for the long story...
    Thank you!

Inspect the CV joint boots for damage. It's possible they are torn and have let road dirt into the grease causing premature wear. Have the automatic idle control valve cleaned or replaced.

SOURCE: all dash warning lights came

You're alternator has gone bad and the vehicle was running on battery power. The "clicking" sound is your now dead battery that does not have enough power to turn over the starter. You might also want to check your power steering pump for leak. This is a know problem with early LS400s and will most likey be the cause of the alternator failure. I just dropped $1050.00 to fix the very same promblems you have.

SOURCE: RX300 Engine Stalls when I take foot off the gas pedal.

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is clogged. This part feeds air to the engine at start-up and idle when the throttle bodies are closed. I removed the throttle body assembly from my 2001 RX300 and separated it from the IAC. After a good cleaning with throttle body cleaner the IAC was good as new. I later decided to replace it during routine maintenance. You can pick up a brand new IAC on eBay (genuine Lexus/Toyota part). The dealer will want upwards of $400.00 for a 45 minute job (all you need are basis hand tools).

There is another post that I answered that is the same thing. You need to clean your IACV. See other post for details!

if its all wheel drive, you will have CV joints in the front. if the boots on the cv joints are damaged, torn ripped etc, then dust and debris will have entered into the cv joint and wreak all types of havoc on the bearing. To test, go into a parking lot and at slow speed....20km, 10 mi/hr turn sharp to one direction and listen to see if the noise becomes apparent = will be grinding or clunking. this is the result of the bearing wearing a groove in the cv bearing housing and when you turn sharply, the bearings do in and out of this groove, causing you to here a clunking sound. also, it should do this wether it is hot or cold = not temperature dependant
