2000 6.5 chevy diesel sometimes it wiil not start. It sounds like it is not getting fuel, most of the time it starts right up. I thought it was the fuel pump relay until I tried to start it with the relay disconnected and it started.

The problem has been so sporadic that I am still at a loss as if the new fuel pump reley that i put on will fix it. The fuel from the back tank never emptys out it always stays full why would this be and would this give you a clue why on occasion it won't start?

This is likely a PMD or pump mounted driver which is the black box on the side of the injection pump. These have had problems with heat saturation and a kit has been adapted for Hummer for the same reason. The kit reroutes the PMD to a cooler location preventing damage. Be careful, the PMD will have a small circuit board where the elctrical connector is and will need to be pulled out and placed in the new one prior to installation and hooking the electrical connector back up. Let me know if you need anything regarding this.

1. Replace the fuel pump relay.
2. Change the fuel filter.
3. Test the car. If the problem still occurs replace the fuel pump.

two items, check you oil, the fuel pump grounds on the sending unit, install a pressure guage on the feed fuel line with a section of clear plastic line, do the same on the return line, any air bubbles that are in the system will cause engine shutdown, any of these will not set a code on the ecm

Fuel presure dodge diesel ?

all i can tell you is that as long as you dont go below 4 psi you should not starve injection pump, this is a minimum psi though., 10-13 psi is average on my 2002 at service port.
