Are you sure you have enough refrigerant in the system to get the a/c to work. If the a/c is low on charge nothing will work.

Pull the a/c relay. With the key on there should be power at two of the pins. This is the power supply from the a/c fuse and the ignition E fuse. One of the pins should be grounded all the time. This is the supply circuit to the a/c compressor relay. The last pin is the ground supplied from the VCM. This should be grounded anytime the a/c is commanded on.

You can also check for power to the a/c high pressure switch located on the back side of the compressor. There should be power to it anytime the a/c is turned on from the hvac control head. The high pressure switch should be closed with the key on engine off, meaning there should be power in on the light blue wire and power out on the dark green with white wire you can also check the switch with an ohm meter if it reads open the switch is bad. Note... The a/c system will need to be evacuated in order to replace the switch.

That should give you a couple of things to check. Let me know what you find

05 tc. A/C blows hot then cold. Didn't blow cold

The A/C pump ismade of three seperate components. You are correct in it being electrical, to some degree. The compressor is self turnes, & in turning moves the freon thru the condensor, dryer, evaporator, & condensor. With the engine off, you can grab the clutch on the compressor, & turn it manually. Now, to your question. When you turn on your A/C, it sends a signal to one of 3 parts on your A/C compressor. The 1st signal, is a charge to the magnet (not its nomenclature name) that pulls the clutch, quickly, into the compressor shaft, so it can start turning. Now as this signal, is working,on an intermittant basis, 1 your clutch has been damaged, not always engaging fully, causing disc wear. The activating magnet, works intermittantly, this too, strains the electrical wiring, going thru the compressor to the magnet. Now the compressor works, but, 2 components, have gotten very hot, by intermittant action. To remove them, if "fused", will be labor intensive. Thanhaving a "sealed" system, dis-assembled, then re-assembled on a mechanics work table. No matter how hard I try its never completely clean......the repaired compressor can allow harmful contaminates into a system that works, with one part not working. Once contaminates are in the system......all the components can be damaged. The mechanic, is giving you the most cost efficieant repair, that will last longest, with least possiblility of failure.

  1. Air conditioner system is discharged. Have the system evacuated, charged and leak tested by an MVAC certified technician, utilizing approved recovery/recycling equipment. Repair as necessary.
  2. Air conditioner compressor clutch not engaging. Check compressor clutch wiring, electrical connections and compressor clutch, and repair or replace as necessary.

I have a 1999 volvo s70 non-turbo 2.4 5 cyl. I bought it 1 year ago with 124k. It runs great, but the a/c cuts off when it gets over 90 degrees. At freeway speeds, it stays on (until it gets around 100...

There have been a lot of problems with the compressor cutting out when it gets hot. When the A/C begins to blow warm, check the power supply wire to the compressor. If there is power in the wire, you will most likely have to replace the compressor. If there is no power, you will have to trace it back to see what the problem is (a wiring diagram will help greatly).

The condensor (or dryer) needs to be replaced if its older and especially if the compressor has not worked is several months or more..
As a matter of fact - allot of the time whn you buy a compressor they will not waranty it unless you buy a dryer too..
Also - be sure the compressor is getting power..

Rate well ;o)

Running a hot wire bypasses any compressor cycling. Low side should pull down to 20 psi or less when compressor is hot wired. If not pulling down you may have weak compressor or way to much freon in system.

96 gmc k1500 4x4. a/c does not work

The 5.7l has a low pressure on off switch. if you freon is low it will not allow it to turn on. This is a way to protect the compressor. By jumping that compressor switch, it will turn on and blow hot because there is no freon AND NO COMPRESSOR OIL!!!! don't do it very long or you will trash your compressor if it is not already. Most vehicles these days have this safety feature.
