This is typical for gm ...what is your concern? I myself have had three gm suv vehicles all of them have had tranny problems mostly soliniod packs went bad in the tranny...e-mail me back let me know if i can be of some help on the rebuild

Going about 20 mph rpms will jump it acts like it is in neutral its an 02 mitsubshi lancer es with about 154000 miles its done this same thing just at a higher speed it would do this then it quit doing it...

Have the transmission seviced. check the condition of the old fluid. if it smells burnt you may need ferther repairs, but try just having it serviced or flushed first you may be able to save yourself a very expensive repair.

My 2005 (sorry not 2006) 3.5 v6 malibu has 154000 miles on it and I have never changed the transmission fluid on it. The manual says it doesn't need it based on my driving habits. Now I am starting to...

Having used the car for about five years and with a reasonable mileage clocked it willonly be good to change the fluid. If you can access the quality of the fluid with a sample it will be more confirmed but then replacement must be with the reccommended grade/quality.
Now my advice will be to change the fluid along with your scheduled service so that there is no dispute of the grade and it might not lead us to speculation.

service it every 60,000 miles, use the new Dexron 6 fluid.

Oil gauge at start up run about 45psi then drops off 10-20 psi

Thats normal on high milage engines. They do that because the cam and main bearings are warn.
Try an oil treatment.

A you first or second owner?
depends how you drive, economical or sports, provided doing regular service, it is difficult to say these engines can go for 100 miles and can withstand even more so
