Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

I have a 97 Toyota RAV4 which sometimes while driving down the road the car seems to shift to nutral. The RPM's will go up to about 4000 and the car seems to only be coasting. I can let off the gas and when the RPM drop down, I can speed back up again until it does it again. Some days it may not do any thing at all, while other days it may do it several times.

Check you transmission fluid for proper levels. If ok, have the transmission oil and filter changed!! If that doesnt remedy the issue, its possible the transmission needs to be replaced or rebuilt!!

You need the transmission tested for fault codes, it is computer shifted, if all checks ok with the control system then you have a failing transmission that will need to be rebuilt.

Sticking accelerator in my 97 rav4 what causes this and how do I fix it

Make sure floor mat is not compromising accelerator pedal operation. Check throttle cable for sticking and binding.... lube if necessary. Check throttle linkage at intake for sticking/binding and repair as necessary

My husband just called from the road asking if I knew what it meant with the ETC light in our 1996 RAV4 came on. Any info. I can call him back with? Thank you!

ECT stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. When you push the button in, there should be a light on the dash that says "ECT POWER". This changes the normal shift times (based on engine vacuum, rpm, and throttle position) to a later point. This means simply that the engine rpms will go higher before shifting to a higher gear when you're accelerating. It helps build speed more quickly but uses more gas to do so.

97 toyota rav 4 dies at accel.

most likely its your fuel pump. when the rpm's start to drop just give the gas pedal a few pumps and you should be good.
