It is very common for the VSS to fail on the escorts of that vintage. the VSS sensor is located on the top side of transmsision near the fire wall. it is accessed from under vehicle while on lift, near center of vehciel, there will be a few wires going to it. this sensor has a tendancy to rot into the transmsison based on you geographical location (rust belt??) it can be very difficult to remove it from the transmssio n..they usually break when they do come out (if you live is a rusty area)

My check engie light came on then about a week or so later my speedometer stopped working on my 2000 ford ecsort

The Vehicle Speed Sensor is what tells the Speedometer how fast you are going. Have your check engine light scanned for the code that is set. Replace the Vehicle Speed Sensor if necessary.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
  3. Unclip the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wire clip from the VSS bracket.
  4. Remove the VSS retaining bolt.
  5. Remove the VSS.
Installation
  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

99 Ford Escort ZX2 Speedometer/Odometer doesn't work

I'm sorry, I have to ask, this is an automatic right? That out of the way, Does the trans shift different when you drove it with the Vss unplugged when you had the ohm meter on it? 8.5 volts? Something sounds wrong here. I'll have to look up the wiring diagram before I can say thats a bad reading but it should be battery voltage (14 volts running) or 5 volts?

Hi i have a 1999 ford cougar and the speedo is faulty sumtimes it works n sometimes it dont wen it doesnt it idles irraticly and sumtimes cuts out wot could this be?

I think you may have a faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS). It is located in the transmission behind the engine. It does control the speedometer and the computer uses the speed signal to adjust fuel. You would really need someone to attach a scan too and look at the vss readings to see if they are erratic.

Broken speedometer on 1997 ford explorer

does your cruise control work? If not, check the wiring from the VSS to the speedo cluster. Check VSS connector closely for pin pudhout or corrosion

Sometimes, the VSS siganl is converted by the instrument cluster and sent to the PCM and speedo.

Check engine light on?

Speedometer
The electronic speedometer (17255) receives a speed signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731). This sensor is also used to sense vehicle speed for the engine management system and to regulate the cruise control when equipped.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vehicle Speed Sensor The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (Figure 53) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect type sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling.

Speedometer

You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic. If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.

If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I need to.
