Question about 1999 Honda Passport

2 Answers

I have a 1999 honda passport. I took it to the dealership with the check engine light on. The code found is PO44O evap system malfunction. But they said they coiuldnt go any farther with proper diagnosis because current honda tester will not communicate with a passport. How can you tell then what needs replacement?

  • For a 1999 Honda Passport, an error code P0440 means the gas cap is not on tight or is not sealing proper. And the dealer told you their scanners did not work for the vehicles that come to the dealerships? Interesting..
  • Check the gas cap and make sure the plastic wire that hold it is not caught up in it preventing a good seal.
  • Make sure that you click the gas cap three or four times when screwing it on to make sure it seals good.
  • Sometimes the "O" ring on the cap can become dry and or cracked. So make sure it is not cracked.
  • Sometimes you can add a little bit of motor oil to the "O" ring to help it lubricate and this will temporary fix the leak.
  • Or you can just get a new gas cap and then have the code cleared.

  • Not very often this code can be caused by the Fuel Pressure Tank Sensor located by the fuel pump goes bad. This is possible but rare to be honest.
  • If you are getting this code, and it is this only code, address the gas cap.

    • I was not privy to your response until after the post I made. That code indicates a bad gas cap or fuel pressure sensor. However, if the dealership scanner could not communicate right then there is one thing this could be coming from. The upper intake on these were notorious for rupturing.

    • This could be the upper intake gaskets. It happened with a many 199 Honda Passports. The only way to know is with the codes. I don't know why a dealer would not have the capabilities to read a code of vehicles bound to come to the dealership. The code you cave indicates a couple of possibilities and the upper intake has been a huge problem with them too. I can't pull a code out of air. All I have is what you have posted. Have the code read at a place with the right scanning tools and go from there.

    Regards,

    Tony

    • If you want to spray some carborator cleaner around the upper intake and see if your RPS change this is a small test for the upper intake. If your RPMs change then you for sure have a leak.

Welcome to Fixya

Code P0440 is the evap. system, This code comes on when the gas cap is left off or if the wire gets tangeled in the gascap threads. On rare cases the Fuel tank pressure sensor fails and will also cause your code. It is located right next to the fuel pump on top of the gas tank. Thank you for using Fixya!

P1457 HONDA - Evaporative Emissions Control System Leakage EVAP Canister Systemxicon.jpghttp://engine-codes.com/p1457_honda.htmlForum CodePossible causes- Missing Fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap There is a Honda factory service bulletin with information on how to diagnose the P1456 on the following Honda models:
1998 Honda Accord
1999 Honda Accord
2000 Honda Accord
1998-2000 Honda Accord
symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Possible a noticeable fuel odor caused by the release of fuel vaporsP1457 HONDA Description The evaporative emission (EVAP) control system stores fuel vapor from the fuel tank in the EVAP canister temporarily to prevent it from escaping to the atmosphere and to enable it to be drawn into the engine by intake manifold vacuum and burned. In addition, the onboard refueling vapor recovery system (ORVR) stores fuel vapor generated when refueling in the EVAP canister.

The EVAP control system leak detection method improves the accuracy and frequency of the detection by determining faulty components and vapor leakage for each part. The EVAP control system (from the purge valve to the fuel tank) is divided into two parts. One is the "EVAP Canister Side" (from the EVAP two way valve to the purge valve) and the other is the "Tank Side" (from the EVAP two way valve to the fuel tank). There is 0.04 inch leak detection and 0.02 inch leak detection. If the 0.04 inch leak detection results are OK, the 0.02 inch leak detection runs. The P1457 code is detected when the EVAP system has a very small leak.

P0107 HONDA Description The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor provides instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's Engine Control Module. The data is used to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass flow rate, which in turn determines the required fuel metering for optimum combustion. A fuel-injected engine may alternately use a Mass Air Flow sensor to detect the intake airflow. A typical configuration employs one or the other, but seldom both.

In some vehicles the absolute pressure sensor is built into ECM. Engine light on diagnosed PO44O dodge said probably the purge control solonoid. where is this located on a 2004 dodge neon?

Try checking the gas cap first off. 95% of the time, an EVAP code, (purge solenoids, or any EVAP code) could be caused by a lose gas cap, or a defective gas cap.

And I know on SOME neons, the evap canister purge solenoid is located on a bracket attached to the air cleaner. Hope this helped.
