SOURCE: i replaced the alternator on

It could be from the ignition or the key itself. The computer key chip in the dash.It needs to be reprogrammed. The computer chips in the keys or the reader for the ingition switch lost its program. All keys had to be reprogrammed to resolve this issue. You can get the key reprogrammed from the dealer or from a locksmith. The locksmiths have the key reprogramming machine.but if they are not helping then the dealer has to reprogram the key. --------- But after re-programming the key if the same problem repeats then this problem is related to the key transponder located under the dash or It Could be that the computer chip in the ignition switch is going bad and loosing its programming.
--------- and one more info i would like to give you is that, this problem is very common in Nissan cars. Many other users are also facing this problem. But after reprogramming in most of the cases the problem is getting solved. ----------- This should help.thanks.helpmech.

I put the wrong key in my 2000 maxima now the right key wont work. How do I reprogram it.

Check your owners manual. Put the right key in the ignition, turn it on until the gauges light up and leave it for about 10 minutes like that. If it has a security light or a theft light flashing wait until it goes off, then remove the key and try to start it.

2000 Alero Security light flashing and wont start

With the new lock cylinder in it, turn the key on. The security light should blink. Leave the key on for 10 minutes, the security light will quit blinking and go out after 10 min. This will reprogram your security system and the car should start. Also leave a battery charger on it while the key is on, If the battery goes dead during the 10 minute reprogram sequence, you will have to start over again.
