Question about 2000 Ford Taurus
Just had the same problem on my 2001 Taurus. Solution? I checked to see if the brake lights worked. They did not. I jiggled the connector on the brake light switch and the brake lights now work and the shifter works good again too.
For 2 days I could not get the car to shift out of park once I started the car. I figured out that by turning the key to on - but not actually starting the car I could pull the gear shift toward me I could then crank the starter and put the car in gear. I didn't have brake lights on a 600 mile trip and didn't realize it until I checked this forum for similar problems. Jiggling the brake switch connector cured both problems. Must have had oxidation. I'll spray it with WD40 in the morning.

This might sound strange, but check your stopping lights and make sure they're working. If I'm not mistaken, this model had a stop light "feature" that prevented the car from moving from the park position if required lights were blown out.
The other problem could be your pawl in the transmission. Sometimes, if you don't use your parking brake, a groove can shave into it. This is usually if you are often parking on an incline, in which you should use your parking brake to avoid pawl grinding.
I'm sure you checked for nobs or release buttons, but I figured I would mention it just in case. I know my car has one, but if you drive this car often...I'm sure you knew it was there to begin with.
