Question about 2001 Dodge Stratus

I believe the rear strut on the car has finally broken through the rear of the car. I don't really know what or where the strut is???

The right and left side in the back or rear are mostly the same so how do you know that this happend and which tire did it or both ?

Rear wheel bearings

Get a different shop to check all of the suspension components - if the struts both snapped, something is going on that's a much bigger concern than the wheel bearings. Look for bent control arms and other suspension components - check clearances and bushings everywhere in the rear, make sure nothing was installed backwards or forgotten. Struts don't just snap, and bearings should definitely not die every couple thousand miles. Also, have a dealer look at it, to make sure that things are installed properly. It won't be cheap there, but they might notice something that other shops routinely miss. I hate suggesting that ANYONE go to a dealership for service, but in this case, they're the most likely to notice something out of spec...

I have 2004 ford freestar it makes a poping noise as u drive changed cv joint don't know what else it might be

lots of things can make it "pop". check the hub bearings, the stabilizer links, the tie rod ends, the balljoints, the struts and strut mounts, the engine cradle bushings, the control arm bushings ,and the engine mounts. GOOD LUCK!

Removing struts for 2003 lexus ls430

Most of the autoparts stores have the spring compressor you'll need. Front & rear have a thru bolt on the bottom, then the strut is secured by one nut at the top into the strut mount which should have a few nuts you have to remove.

The dangerous part is the coil spring that has to be removed. It will shoot off of the strut if you remove the one large nut on the top of the threaded strut rod.

This could really hurt someone!!! The pressure on the spring must be removed, before removing that nut and that's done after the strut assy. is off of the car!

You need to remove it completely with the strut mount, leaving the spring installed. Then, following the safety instructions for using a coil spring compressor, you can remove the spring and transfer the reusable parts to the new strut and reinstall. Leave the spring compressed and just go from the one it's mounted on, to the new one and put it in the exact same position. Look at where the spring is before dissasembly on the old strut.

I suggest a manual, there are details, like making sure the spring is turned properly to fit as it did before removal. Removing pressure on the suspension to be able to savely remove the strut without it binding & such.

I've done a complete car myself in a few hours, but I have all of the tools. Sometimes it's difficult without a HD Impact wrench, to get these parts to break loose, especially the nut on top of the threaded strut rod. A pipe wrench can be used to hold the rod on the old part, since it won't be used again and that will secure the rod as you loosen the top nut.

Be careful, follow the instructions in your repair manual. If you don't have one and you're attempting this type of work, you may want to spend a few $$$ just to have illustrated instructions right there for every step. If you know your cars, have a decent set of mechanics tools and the special equipment required for this task, it's not a difficult job.

I have a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero, I wonder how many struts does the care have. I have heard it has brakes and struts?

if you don't hear noise, clunking over bumps, or you jack the car and the strut/shock isn't leaking fluid and the spring is holding the car up and not sagging you don't need struts. You knew you needed brakes, you'll know when your suspension is in need of repair. then theres the old rock the car up n down. just get 2nd n 3rd opinion-save $$$

They are stand alone shocks
Here are the part numbers you need.

You just go to an auto parts store or dealer & buy the struts

You don't pay a repair shop to put them on

You wouldn't have someone replace your wiper blades

Sound like i need shocks or struts but been told there are not any on 2000 stype

The front uses struts and the rear use shock assemblies. Who ever told you that, don't let them work on the car. let me know if you need anything else.

depending on mileage and relationship you have with your dealer, the rear struts may still be under warranty. 24,000 miles if i remember right. those are your issues. replace the rear struts. cheers
