Question about Suzuki Esteem

Put $15.00 gas in my 2001 Esteem, and the fuel gauge didn't move? I just purchased this car last week, and really love it. But I really need to know how much gas is in it! Thanks

There is a sensor that is in the gasoline tank that is also connected to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. You need to have someone to replace the cable or wires when you have no gasoline in the tank. When you went to gas station and put 15 dollars into car on the pump should say how much gallons on the pump at the gas station. Ok so 15 divide by 3.90 per gallon equals 3.846 gallons in your tank

You have to drop the gas tank to fix this. Let me know if your up to it and I will help you through it. Also the level switch is part of the sending unit, With the fuel pump. New will be seberal hundred dollars.Installed at a garge will be $500. to $700.00. If you want to replace just the switch , you can get a sending unit at a junk yard for around $75.00

Fuel gauge stays on full

Sounds like you have a bad sending unit in your gas tank. You will need to take it to a mechanic to get checked. This isn't really a do it yourself type repair since it involves removing the gas tank.

I have a 2002 Chevy Impala, my gas gauge was acting all screwy so I purchased a new fuel pump. I paid a "mechanic" to put the new pump in, well he didn't know that you could go through the...

you can put the pipes on the wrong way but the pressure would popped something some were as it is not a pressured line its just a return line. also it would back feed as there is a none return on the intake line. there were test's done on a few common makes of cars just to see what would happen if this was done. and it turn's out on a old engine there was no problems engine would run but over time the engine would fail as the pump was sucking instead of pumping, now it was a different story for egr engines as it would pump fuel out of the exhaust engine would run but it was ruff.and as the egr would get to temp it would catch fire. so on injection engines it was made clear witch way the fuel lines are some models have a 8mm line for the fuel line to pump and a 10mm line on the return. but as the pipes get older they stretch and can be mistaken so you would need to look to see witch line the filter is on to pump out, now this was ok doing it this way but to save money in making the car they used unfit parts that fit other cars and other models. so now the pump out are the same size and a part of the pipe goes to a joint where it changes from 10mm down to 8mm intake line. so would check to see witch line is on what from the pump.

Fuel guage on chevrolet 2001 fluctuates

sounds like a fuel sending unit issue from your description.
see if this fits the bill.

that is for the

2001 - 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 Fuel Tank Sending Unit for V8 8.1L

good luck.

by the way the issue may be one or more things to be honest. the fuel in the tank may be moving around and as it shushes from side to side the electrical resistance in the variable potentiometer of the fuel sending unit will either increase or decrease.

an example would be a full tank of gas will cause a floater attached to a lever to float to the top of the gas tank. now as the gas gets lower the level wil drop and so will the float. now remember it's attached to a pot so as it moves it's electrical value decreases. and the gas gauge reads the value as a fuel level.

if the gauge dose not move when the vehicle is idle then id say it;s just the gas moving around within the tank. it's worth a shot to test this before spending any money on it.

good luck.

I would check the fuel pressure. You will need a fuel pressure gauge to check it, but it could be a bad fuel pump or plugged fuel filter. A gauge will help you test them.

Look at the old fuel pump and pick it up. Does it have a piece hanging off the side that you can move up and down? If so, that needs to go on the new fuel pump that is in the tank now if that didn't have one. That is your level sensor and the only way your gauge will ever work is if it is attached properly and the electrical connector plugged in. If you had transferred it to the new pump, you're still going to need to pull it down and make sure you didn't put it on backwards (not even sure that's possible).

check the fuel filter for glogging up. and pressure test the fuel pump to see if fuel is reaching engine ok. it could be a failing fuel pump. but if a pump really goes engine quits as well as the fuel pump.after getting things checked out. you may want to clean out throttle body, especially around throttle plate. and make sure air filter is clean, and the plugs are ok.
